Winter Weather and Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Cold

We are having some harsh winter weather with temperatures at and below freezing, and this is a good time to review some safe practices for your cats and dogs. If you are cold, so are they..Brr! Small dogs and short haired dogs may need a sweater or coat when going outside; clean paws when they come in due to ice and harsh chemicals in deicing products. Make sure that auto antifreeze is not spilled in the area where your pets are, and store properly as this will poison them if they lick the sweet substance. Never leave your pet in a car without heat in the cold weather. We do not recommend that your cats be freely left outdoors for their own safety and for the safety of the songbirds and other wild animals, as well as the threat of harm or injury.

The Yonkers Humane Society does not recommend leaving pets outside in any weather, especially being left alone outdoors. However, dog shelters are required by law. If you suspect an animal is being abused or left outside in harsh weather, without sufficient food or shelter, please call the SPCA Humane Law Enforcement Division at 914 941 7797 or if urgent emergency, your local Police Department.

Stay Warm!

If you have a lost dog please fill out this report!

If you need foodstamps for your pets, please take a look at this!

The Yonkers Humane Society does not directly take in stray animals or handle emergencies. All of our adoptable pets come from the Yonkers Animal Shelter in order to help stem shelter overflow and keep euthanasia rates down.

  • For strays or lost animals: The Yonkers Animal Shelter is open 7 days a week from 11am-4pm. Their phone number is (914) 377-6730.
  • After hours and/or for injured animals found: Call the Yonkers Action Center at (914) 377-6800, available 24 hours a day.
  • If you suspect an animal has rabies, or if an attack/bite has occurred: Call the Yonkers Police Department at (914) 377-7900.

The Yonkers Humane Society, Inc. was established to support the animals at the Yonkers Animal Shelter and animals in the community. We work with staff and administration to improve the life of shelter residents and we work to keep animals out of the shelter by coordinating with rescue networks. Some of our present and future projects include:

  • Contributing to the fund to build a new shelter, replacing the outmoded facility now in operation
  • Sponsoring community adoption days
  • Purchasing a mobile adoption van to provide low cost spay/neuter services to residents
  • Supporting the spay/neuter programs to reduce overpopulation and decrease the number of unwanted pets
  • Contributing funds for specialized care for abused and neglected animals
  • Providing educational programs to schools and community groups in order to reduce the incidence of animal abuse
  • Helping to promote senior and special needs dogs that are currently up for adoption at the Yonkers Animal Shelter

Bella two weeks at the Shelter

I was on Facebook and noticed an article about a lost dog in Cook Field in Yonkers describing how the dog was digging through the garbage dumpster, skinny and scared. It looked like she had on a red halter and a chain attached which she was dragging.

One of the Yonkers Humane Society's goals is to help find homes for special needs pets and provide grants for their medical care. Every pet--no matter how old or in need of medical attention--deserves a home to call their own.

Sadly, one of our former special needs recipients and cat room residents, Sammy, recently passed away. He was a favorite among Yonkers Humane Society volunteers, and was fortunate enough to spend his last few months with his new family. Since Sammy held a special place in everyone's heart, the Yonkers Humane Society is how renaming it's special needs fund as Sammy's Angel Fund. All proceeds donated to Sammy's Angel Fund will go directly to the care of special needs animals. Please consider making a donation.

There are many ways you can help the Yonkers Humane Society. In addition to our fundraising drive to raise money towards the construction of the new Yonkers Animal Shelter, we also need funds to keep our Petsmart cat room and outreach programs going! Everything you donate--be it time, money, or old blankets-- goes to the animals!

iGive.com: Click on the icon above, register online, and iGive will donate $5 to our cause. Once you're registered, you can do all your usual online shopping through iGive, and part of the proceeds from your purchases will go to the Yonkers Humane Society. Over 600 major retailers (such as Amazon.com and expedia.com) are a part of iGive. If you aren't much of an online shopper, that's okay, too! Every search you do on the search.igive.com search engine generates a $0.02 donation to the Yonkers Humane Society. Every little bit helps!

You can always donate your time! Our Petsmart cat room relies on volunteers to clean the cat condos and socialize our furry friends, and morning and evening shifts are available 7 days a week. Our volunteer application can be downloaded
here (Choose File and select Save As...). You can fill it out and drop it off at the cat room at Petsmart. If no one is there, you can just slip it under the door, and someone will contact you promptly.

In addition to volunteering at the cat room, we are also desperately in need of volunteers in other areas, such as:

  • fundraising
  • helping us organize our database
  • helping out at special events
  • sorting/labeling/folding materials for mass mailings (such as our newsletter)
  • helping with online support (keeping myspace/facebook/catster up-to-date, taking pictures of all our cats at petsmart so that petfinder and related websites can stay updated, etc.)
If interested in helping in any of the above areas, please contact Rosemary at (914) 584-0374, or Leila at (914) 751-7870.

Donate Goods
We are always accepting donations for our cat room at Petsmart in Yonkers on Central Park Avenue (behind Best Buy). Some items on our wishlist include:

  • Wet food (the cats love anything fishy, like tuna or oceanfish)
  • Catnip toys
  • Cat beds
  • Litter
  • Scratching posts
  • Old towels and blankets
  • Large Kong toys
  • Cat treats and dog biscuits
  • Donations for tag sales
  • We'd also love to have a large cat tree for the cats to perch on

Anything that we do not use at the cat room will be taken to the Yonkers Animal Shelter. Everything you donate goes to the animals!
