Who We Are
The Yancey Humane Society & Animal Shelter is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. We are located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, just 30 miles north of Asheville. We take in most animals brought to us: including all strays, feral dog and cats. We accept personal pets on a case by case basis. We provide a loving temporary home until they can be placed in a permanent home. We are not a "no kill" shelter, however, we do not have a time limit or euthanize for space reasons. We make every effort to know the temperament and personality of each and every animal in our shelter. We hope no adoptable animals will slip through the system. YHS veterinary services are provided by Dr. Ted Wright of Cedar Ridge Animal Hospital in Asheville. Dr. Ted serves as our volunteer veterinarians of record. If you are looking for a pet, consider adopting from YHS. We will do our best to help match you with the perfect friend who will fit your lifestyle.
We are located next to the Cane River Middle School, at 962 Cane River School Road, just west of town.
Our shelter hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12pm til 5pm, and on Saturday from 12pm til 4pm. Closed Sunday and Wednesday.
Adopting a Friend
Currently, our adoption fee for puppies and dogs is $65. This fee includes worming, age appropriate vaccinations, micro-chipping, and basic spay/neuter costs. Cats and kittens adoptions are $35 and we often offer a two for one adoption fee on our felines. This fee includes worming, age appropriate vaccinations, and basic spay/neuter costs. Cats and kittens are microchipped only if requested by the adopter and there is an additional fee of $10 per pet. We strive for all animals to be spayed or neutered before going home.
NEW: You may now pay our adoption fee via PayPal or by credit card over the phone. Using PayPal, simply go to our 'donation' area and pay via PayPal, specifying that the amount is for the adoption of a (name and number of the animal.) Please include your name, address, and phone number. There is a $3.00 service fee added on to the adoption fee if you use PayPal. Please add this amount to your fee.
Volunteering and Donations
Our three mainstays vital to funding our Animal Shelter remain donations, memberships and fundraisers. From mail-in donations to store counter "doggie banks", every penny goes to the welfare of these animals. We, also, accept donations to memorialize a lost pet or favorite animal lover. Donations make great gifts for the animal lovers in your life. At the shelter we have a pet store where you can create goodie bags for your favorite pooch or kitty, with all proceeds helping their furry friends.

Spaying and neutering pets is the answer to pet overpopulation!
We are always looking for volunteers. Volunteers can work in the shelter facility or help away from the shelter. The critters love having you come and play with them! It is great exercise to walk the dogs. If you can assist with behavior training of dogs and puppies, stop by the Shelter because you can help prepare them for adoption! If you have any questions, just call!
We accept donations of cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and paper goods. YHS is a active participant in the Hill's Science Diet "Shelter Nutrition Program." We are not able to use or feed other brands of dog or cat food for our pets here at the shelter, however donations of dog and cat food are accepted for our community pet food bank.
Please, let us know if you can lend a hand!
