The animal shelter is open on Mondays from 12:30pm until 4:30pm, Tuesdays thru Thursdays from 10:00am until 2:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am until noon.. Adoption and rabies vaccinations are available during these times. Rabies shots are $5 for cats and dogs over the age of 4 months. Dogs living in the county are required to have a $2 county tax tag.
Adopting a Friend
Adoption fees for Dogs $150.00 this includes spay or neutering, Heartworm test, and their first set of DHPPv/Bordatella vaccines. Cats will be $100.00 this includes spaying or neutering, FIV/FeLV test and their first set of feline vaccines. Rabies vaccinations will be an additional $5.00. The shelter staff will have the pet delivered to the vet and you may pick your pet up from the vet after the procedure is done. Pets that are to young to be spayed or neutered will be done when they are old enough.
Adoption Rules and Requirements
No health or temperament guarantees are given or implied
All applicants must be least 18 years of age and have a valid ID
All dogs shall be listed on county property taxes as required by law
If the adopter lives in rental or public housing, the facility must allow pets and the adopter shall supply landlord or mangerís name and phone number for verification
The adopter shall familiarize themselves with all the local ordinances, state statutes, or federal law pertaining to their animalsóThis information is available on the shelter website ( ) and http://www.ncga.state.nc.us under state statutes
The animal being adopted must be spayed or neutered with in 4 months of the adoption or proof showing that an appointment has been made for this procedure. Failure to follow this requirement will result in the seizure of the animal in question and a forfeiture of all fees paid
You may not adopt an animal for someone else (this does not pertain to parents adopting animals for their children as long as they are aware they are responsible for the animal and not their child)
Persons who are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs cannot adopt
Persons convicted of dog fighting, animal cruelty, or have excessive animal ordinance violations cannot adopt
The adopter has three working days for the time of the adoption to return the animals to the shelter for a refund due to sickness or natural death of the animal (satisfactory evidence such as the carcass of the animal or a veterinarianís certification must be presented)

The Vance County Animal Shelter is located in Henderson, North Carolina. It is about 40 minutes from Durham, NC and about 2 hours from Richmond, VA, off I-85.
From I-85 at Henderson, take the Ruin Creek Road Exit. Turn right if coming from the south; left if from the north - unto Ruin Creek Rd. Go to the third stop light and turn right on US 158 Business. Go to the next stop light and turn left onto Vance Academy Road. The Animal Shelter is the second building on the left. (Tan with burgandy shutters and trim.)
From Raleigh, take US 1 North to Business US Hwy 1 at Henderson. Turn left onto Raleigh Road. Take a left to Dabney Dr. Ext. (Burger King will be on your right) Then left onto Oxford Rd. (Hardees will be on the corner.)Go several miles. Turn left onto Vance Academy Road. We're the second building on left.
