Our Featured Pet...
ALL DOGS AT STAR-MAR RESCUE ARE SPECIAL. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT ALL OUR DOGS. Please research the breed of dog you are interested in. Star-Mar strives to place their dogs in permanent homes. Adopters should be aware of the activity level and other characteristics of the breed or breed mix they are interested in so the dog or puppy of their choice fits into their lifestyle. If you are looking at a puppy mill dog please do some research on these dogs to better understand their needs. To be fair to the dogs, adopters must be committed to trying to work through adjustment problems possible with any rescue dog. Teaching a dog the rules of your particular household cannot be done in a matter of a few days or even a few weeks. Please consider and commit to this BEFORE taking home a Star-Mar dog.
Star-Mar has been an avid supporter and participate in the commercial breeder/puppy mill legislation in Ohio. In December of 2012 Senate Bill 130 passed into law forever changing the plight of the mill dog. As of December 31, 2013, all high volume dog breeders in Ohio must be registered with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, raising the standard living for Ohio's commercial breeding dogs. Thanks to all that worked so hard to see that this bill became a reality! Please be responsible when choosing to add a new dog to your life. Do not purchase from pet stores. Before buying from a breeder make sure that you can go to their kennel, see their dogs and meet the parents of the puppies. If you can't see the breeder's kennel then don't even bother to go see the puppies.
Star-Mar Rescue is always in need of reliable foster homes. Please contact Martha at 330-262-0515 if you are interested in becoming part of the Star-Mar Family.
LOOK FOR A CHANGE IN RESCUES IN OHIO. As of December 31, 2013, all rescues in the State of Ohio must be registered with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Only registered organization will be allowed to call themselves "rescue". It also disallows registered rescue organizations from buying more than 8 dogs in a year to resell as a "rescue" dog. Reputable Ohio rescues have struggled for years with people who call themselves rescues yet buy and sell entire litters of puppies, purebred and "designer" dogs. The registration and regulation of Ohio's rescues will help to ensure that a person looking for a rescue dog in Ohio will get what they're looking for! If you're looking at a dog in a rescue in Ohio ask to see their registration. A dog rescue organization in Ohio not registered after Dec. 31st, 2013 is functioning illegally in Ohio. Be aware!

Who We Are
Star-Mar Rescue is a member of Rescue Alliance of Hairless and Other Breeds, Inc. ( www.rescuealliance.org) a 501-C-3, non profit organization. Star-Mar Rescue is run by Martha Leary, assisted by dedicated foster providers, friends and family and is located on 26 rural acres in beautiful Wayne County Ohio. Aside from placing our own dogs, Star-Mar helps to place hundreds of dogs every year into other rescues by assisting in pulling dogs from shelters and from commercial breeding kennels/puppy mills. We take dogs into our program from shelters/pounds/humane societies, surrendered by owners and from commercial breeders. Star-Mar never pays an individual or breeder for a dog and never buys dogs off of Craigslist.
Star-Mar Rescue is a natural care provider. We feed a species appropriate, balanced raw diet and carefully monitor vaccines by using blood titers, use no commercial flea or heart worm "preventatives", no chemical on our yards, floors or in our laundry. We are hoping that our adopters will embrace this quickly growing change in pet care. We will be glad to speak with anyone about this approach no matter if you adopt a Star-Mar dog or not. If you go to our facebook page at Star-Mar Rescue you will find a number of articles about natural/holistic care, about integrated vetting, etc.
Adopting a friend
If you have taken the time to consider adding a dog to your family we would like you to know that we have the advantage of being able to expose our dogs to many different situations; children, strangers, other dogs, cats and livestock, inside living and outside living, fenced and not fenced. We are confident that Star-Mar is able to give the potential adopters broad information on each dog so that a good choice can be made.
All dogs and puppies leave spayed or neutered (regardless of age), are heart worm negative, have a negative fecal and have all their shots or show adequate blood titers including a current rabies. Puppy mill dogs will have a negative Brucellosis test. The adoption fee from Star-Mar Rescue is $275. You must come to the foster home to meet the dog and we do home visits prior to adoption. Adoptions are finalized at the home of the foster provider. We adopt within a 2 hour or so drive from the foster home of the dog so that the dog can accompany us on our home visit. The location of the dog can be found in his or her pet profile.
All other dogs and outside cats in your household must have a current rabies as required by law or have a rabies blood titter. No other vaccinations are required. We no longer adopt to people who are using or will continue to use commercial flea preventatives either other or spot on. There are many ways to prevent fleas without harming the dog. Resident dogs do not have to be on commercial heartworm preventative but must have annual heartworm checks done and ALL dogs and cats must be spayed/neutered regardless of age! Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for an application.
