Who We Are

Perth Amboy Animal Control provides many services including, responding to calls such as complaints of nuisance barking, dog(s) running loose, investigation of animal cruelty, provides welfare checks on animals, animal bites and quarantine, rescue of injured and sick animals, and provides humane education.

The City of Perth Amboy Animal Shelter is a small municipal shelter with a huge heart. Currently there are three Animal Control Officers, two full time and one part time. We only accept pets from the City of Perth Amboy. Stray pets are held for seven days prior to being available for adoption. Pets surrendered by their owners (by appointment only) are available for adoption the day after they are taken into the shelter, if the surrendered pet meets the criteria for an adoptable pet. Our mission is for every animal the opportunity to find a home or to have a rescue take them in, we also welcome and encourage fostering for our animals. Unfortunately due to the small size of the shelter pets can not be held indefinitely. We do not euthanize needlessly. We hold animals as long as we can and they are not "put to sleep" just because they haven't been adopted within a certain period of time. We will not euthanize just because of breed or age. This is a municipal shelter and there is a limited amount of space. Aggressive animals are not adopted out and this is for public safety. Feel free to visit your potential new family member at the shelter in our lovely new meet and greet room. We look forward to making your acquaintance. Please email us at animalcontrol@perthamboynjpd.org and visit and "like" our Perth Amboy Animal Shelter Facebook page. Thank you for your continued partnership concerning our animal friends.

Please renew dog and cat licenses. Licenses can be purchased at the City Clerk's Office. Proof of rabies vaccine is required. Dog and cat licenses expire every year on January 31

Stop by for a visit.

We have many lovable pets that are in need of a second chance.

After visiting with the potential new addition to your family, you will be asked to fill out an application. The application is designed to assist us in finding the pet that will fit best with your lifestyle and to help us determine if the adoption is in the animal's best interest. Please keep in mind that all of the companion animals that are at our shelter come from a variety of backgrounds. As a potential adopter, you need to be aware that these animals will require an abundance of love, patience, understanding, training and time to bring them to their full potential and become the friend that you want him/her to be

As a potential adopter, you must:

Be at least 23 years of age

Have identification showing proof of your current residence

Have landlord's or property owner's permission to bring a dog or cat onto the property and to keep in your residence.

The person filling out the application must be the potential adopter

We cannot guarantee the health and/or temperament of any animal

Leaving any questions blank or not being truthful on the application will result in a delay or refusal of your application;

Understand that you are not buying an animal, you are making a lifetime commitment.

Please be certain that you have time to spend with your new pet, including the time for training (or re-training), and exercise. We hope you will agree that the animal's well being is our first consideration. The shelter staff reserves the right to refuse any adoption.

Thank you for considering one our of pets for adoption

If you need to surrender your cat or dog please call to check if there is available space and to set up an appointment before bringing your pet to the shelter.

The shelter is small and has limited space available. Please call the shelter first to check on space availability. To surrender a pet you must have identification with your current address and be the true owner of the dog or cat. There is a surrender fee of $15.00 per adoptable dog or cat. Thank you for your understanding.
