What does the Dunedin Doggie Rescue do

We rescue dogs from rural kill shelters on their last days (waiting for the local community to hopefully adopt first). We bring them to Dunedin, FL; get them fully vetted and up to date with shots and all needed medical treatment. We train and socialize them by bringing them to a variety of public places for showings... and then we find a forever home for them in DOGEDEN. Dunedin Doggie Rescue depends on a dedicated staff of an all volunteer staff to provide housing, medical treatment and training for every pet that come through their doors. The Rescue specifically focuses on taking in dogs with the greatest need, one whose time is up, mostly the rural kill shelters. These are usually located at open air facilities located in very out of the way places (including landfills). Once they are rescued from this fate, they are fostered at a multiple volunteer's home until they are ready for adoption by DDR approved adopters. We are doing something different than most rescues in that not only are we hoping to find a wonderful new family member for families in the Dunedin area, but are also trying to build a true community rescue that has happy adopters continuing to help save more dogs through their support (volunteering, fostering, financial).

Adoption Area

Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Oldsmar, Safety Harbor, and Clearwater. We will adopt harder to place dogs (older and/or larger) to all of Pinellas, South Pasco and West Hillsborough, but due to our detailed adoption process, distance is a constraint on our lengthy trial process to ensure the family and dog are a good fit..

Adoption Costs

Our goal of being a true community rescue has led us to develop a CO-OP model for our adoption fees. Several of our dogs have vetting bills well over a $1,000 dollars and we do fundraisers to offset some of these costs versus passing this cost over to the adopter. In order for us to continue this rescue, we need lots of things, but none are more important than volunteers to foster, work events, and help run the rescue. Our fees are based on volunteer service provided to the DDR during the first year after adopting:

$300 = Not bring him/her to any events

$200 = Bring to four events.

$150 = Bring to eight events.

$150 = Bring to four events and volunteer 16 hours at events or foster a dog for a week.

$100 = Bring to four events and volunteer 32 hours at events or foster a dog for a two weeks.

$50= Bring to four events and volunteer 64 hours at events or foster a dog for a total of three weeks.

$50 = Help the DDR coordinate/implement/fundraise something to help the rescue.

Note: Fostering does not have to be consecutive, We have approximately 4 events a month.

Our History

We formed in 2008 and have placed hundreds of dogs that were on their last days at kill shelters from Florida’s rural counties of Bradford (Starke), Citrus (Inverness), Lake Co (Sebring), and Pinellas (Largo) other Animal Controls in Florida.
