Who We Are

C.A.R.E. For Animals is a non-profit, all volunteer animal welfare organization. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of our animal friends by strengthening the bond between humans and animals; ending suffering due to abandonment, abuse, and neglect; and eliminating the need for euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals in our shelters.

Our rescue/adoption program focuses primarily on rescuing animals from area shelters, providing them with safety and rehabilitation in a caring foster family setting, with the goal of adopting them into loving, responsible, and permanent homes. We also partner with area shelters in an effort to increase shelter adoptions, decrease pet overpopulation, and educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

Adopting a friend

We have many wonderful animals waiting to find a special home of their own. C.A.R.E. For Animals seeks loving families who will consider their new pet to be part of their family. Through our application and interview process, we strive to match pets and families together who are compatible in terms of temperament characteristics and lifestyle needs. Because pet ownership is a serious decision and a long-term commitment (of 10 years or more), we believe that suitability of the home, and compatibility of the pet is critical in the adoption process.

Adoption Policies

  • We require that our dogs live primarily inside with their families.
  • We require that our cats live safely inside only in their new homes.
  • We prohibit declawing of our adopted cats, due to the nature of this procedure.
  • A perspective adopter's current pets must be current on their veterinary care AND be spayed/neutered.
  • All adopted pets MUST be spayed/neutered if not done prior to adoption.
  • Prospective adopters must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Typically, we can only consider adoption applicants for individuals who reside within a 1 1/2 hour radius from Raleigh, NC. On occasion, we may be able to expand that radius further if one of our volunteers is able to complete the home visit and the adoption follow-up.
  • We do also have other policies that apply to adopting from our agency that are not listed here, as well as requirements specific to each individual pet and their needs. These things will be discussed with you if you place an application for adoption with us.

We understand that not everyone will agree or be comfortable with our adoption policies and requirements. Everyone has very different philosophies about pet ownership and what is in the best interest of a pet. Our beliefs are based on our knowledge and years of experience with various issues and situations, and what we believe to be in the best interest of our pets.. Unfortunately, we have learned a lot over the years from the mistakes and tragedies of others.

We do ask that you carefully consider, and be honest about whether you can agree with our adoption requirements. We do complete adoption follow-up to ensure that adopters are following the committments they have made to us about the care they will provide our pets. All rescue groups and shelters have different policies, procedures, and expectations, so we would be glad to refer you elsewhere if your philosophies on pet ownership are not compatible with our agency.

    Adoption Procedures

  • Prospective adopters will be required to complete an adoption process, which includes:

  • an adoption application
  • a phone interview to review the application
  • reference check
  • a home visit with the pet - this not only allows us the opportunity to see where our pet would be living, but gives you the opportunity to spend more 1-1 time with the pet in your home, before making a final decision about adoption.
  • upon adoption approval, adopters will be required to sign an adoption contract agreeing to good quality care for their new pet.

Our adoption process generally takes 1-2 weeks to complete, depending on the number of other applications we are processing at that time.

  • C.A.R.E. For Animals offers a 30 day trial period to ensure that both the family and the pet are both happy with the results of the adoption. Within that time, we will refund the full adoption fee if the pet is returned.

  • C.A.R.E. For Animals develops an ongoing relationship with all of our adoptive families. We complete ongoing adoption follow-up to ensure the well-being of our adopted pets, and also serve as an ongoing resource and support to our adopters with the goal of many years of companionship between the family and their pet.

    Adoption Fees

  • Dogs: $150
  • Cats: $100

Each animal has received the following veterinary care prior to adoption:

  • veterinary exam
  • routine vaccinations
  • spay/neuter surgery (according to age)
  • dogs have been tested and started on heartworm preventative
  • cats have been tested for Feline Leukemia/FIV.

(For animals who have not been spayed/neutered, a portion of the adoption fee will be refunded upon proof of surgery.)

C.A.R.E. For Animals is NOT an animal shelter. Our program animals are placed in loving foster homes throughout the Triangle area. We believe there is significant value in the foster-home concept, which allows for the animal's temperament, behavior, and needs to be assessed in a family setting prior to adoption. Animals can be met at our adoption events, or by individual appointment.

This site is dedicated to Simon, a huggable, loveable kitty that brought much joy to his foster mom's life. Rescued from a feral cat colony as a 3 wk. old, scrawny & sickly little fur ball, Simon blossomed into a strikingly handsome creature, who charmed his way into his rescuer's heart...hook, line, and sinker. He loved to be carried and coddled, would literally "flip"over a feather wand, but most of all, he adored his sister, Tabitha. Sadly, Simon was positive for feline leukemia, and the disease overtook his little body just shortly after his first birthday...and only one week before he would have celebrated his 1st anniversary with his foster mom. While Simon never got to be adopted into a permanent home of his own, he will always have a permanent place in his foster mom's heart. Please consider adopting a special needs pet. They are truly SPECIAL, indeed.
