Adopting a friend

$125.00 - Spay/Neuter, Rabies, Heartworm test, 5:1 Booster, Deworming, and a County Dog License.

$65.00 - All dogs 7 years old and older.

Some of our wonderful dogs are eligible for Foster to Adopt! When a dog has been in the shelter for 30 or more days they become eligible to go home with you for up to 5 days to see if he or she is a good match. After the 5 day trial period, you either bring the dog back to us or adopt your furever friend. Be on the lookout on each dogs page to see if they are eligible.

Jog with a dog

Shelter dogs sometimes need out of the shelter so we've thought of a way to get our wonderful volunteers involved. You must be an experienced volunteer. You are now allowed to take the dogs off the premises to go jog on the bike path, go home for the day, or just walk around town. The dogs really enjoy the time away from their kennels. This only applies to approved dogs that are available for adoption.

Would you like to volunteer with us?

We are always accepting new volunteers. Just come in and fill out a volunteer form. These are required to be filled out at the shelter and signed off on by staff and the county commissioners. The whole process takes about a week. Once approved, you can come in and walk the dogs, bath dogs, or sign up for various events we do within the community.

Come Visit Us!

If you have lost a dog it is preferable to come and stop by in person to look at the dogs or at the very least send us a photo for us to compare to dogs in our care.

County Dog Licenses

ALL dogs in the county must have a license even if they live inside or have a fenced-in yard.
Dog licenses can be obtained from the Dog Shelter or Athens County Auditor’s office, 15 South Court Street, Room 330, Athens, Ohio 45701. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, (740) 592-3226. Dog Licenses can also be obtained from satellite locations. For more information about dog licenses see

With money from the dog license fees the county can afford the employees needed to take care of the dogs of the county.
