Who We Are

White River Animal Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit rescue organization. Our mission is to save dogs and puppies from high kill shelters, treat all known medical issues, foster and evaluate, and then place in a forever home. Please note: WE DO NOT HAVE A PHYSICAL SHELTER. Our animals are housed with fosters. We are all volunteers, not paid employees, so if we do not respond right away try to understand. We provide but are not limited to providing the following services: Placement of abandoned/abused/neglected dogs and puppies, flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention, shots including : DHPP. DHLPP, Bordetella, Rabies, microchip, spay/neuter. We provide emergency veterinary care when necessary.

Adopting a canine buddy from White River Animal Rescue

Adopting a puppy or dog can seem like a daunting process. WRAR attempts to create a pleasant experience. The steps to take toward adopting a new buddy are: 1). Complete an adoption application. This form can be found at:

2). If an application is approved (reference check is positive), a volunteer will set up and conduct a home visit. 3). If the dog or puppy is available in one of our foster homes, you and the foster family will set up a time to meet the dog or puppy. All visits are at the discretion of the foster home.

***Keep in mind that because of the high demand of certain aesthetic aspects of some dogs, these dogs could be adoption sight unseen.

Adoption Fee:

Our adoption donation is $500. In order to continue to rescue and re-home dogs and puppies we need to have an adoption fee. If you wish to participate in rescuing a dog, please try to understand why we need to have an adoption fee. We are a non-profit organization dependent upon these fees as well as any and all donations in order to continue our rescue efforts. The adoption fee includes shelter pull fees, quarantine, transportation and veterinarian fees. Many of the dogs we rescue have required some more extensive veterinary care, boarding or special transportation arrangements. Every penny we make on these fees is spent on rescuing other dogs, most of whom are scheduled for euthanasia when we step in. Sometimes it is costly, but it is worth it. Ask us about some of our success stories!

Scheduling a visit

Our dogs and puppies are in foster homes throughout Vermont, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Some may be awaiting transport to us from another location. Appointments are necessary to meet the animals. We at White River Animal Rescue believe that the adoption of a dog or puppy is a COMMITMENT and, once adopted, is a member of the family. Although not pleasant, we do have the right to deny any application, and you must be 25 years or older to adopt from us. All adoptions are made at the discretion of WRAR, and an adoption may be denied at the staff’s discretion.
