About Us

Adopting A Friend

At HSCC, we seek to find loving and permanent homes for the animals in our care. In an effort to ensure animal health and safety, and in the interest of helping you find a good match for your home, family, and lifestyle, we ask that you carefully review our Adoption Policies and Guidelines. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have regarding the adoption process.

1.  Fill out your Adopter Profile
Help us help you find the best match in an animal! Fill out an Adopter Profile at the shelter or download one to bring in with you.

2.  Come in and meet the animals
You won’t really know if Fido is “The One” until you meet him! Drop by any time during our open hours to meet any of the cats, dogs or small animals. Remember to bring your Adopter Profile with you (or you can fill one out at the shelter)!

3.  Adopt your next best friend
Did someone catch your eye? Let our staff know! We’ll tell you everything we know about that animal. When you’re sure he or she is the right match, we’ll set up an adoption appointment for you, during which we’ll give you our best tips for ensuring a successful transition for everyone involved.

General Policies:

  • Adoptions are done by appointment only and can take up to an hour to complete.
  • Appointments are scheduled on the hour and/or half hour (depending on staff availability).
  • During the appointment we review any medical or behavioral information relevant to that animal and answer any questions you may have concerning your new animal. At this time we also collect the adoption fee (see below for additional fee information).
  • Adoptions can sometimes be started but not completed during our last hour of operation. In this case we can arrange an appointment to complete the process.
  • The staff at HSCC reserves the right to refuse an adoption for any reason.

Who We Are

HSCC is a private and independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization serving both Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties whose mission is to foster compassionate treatment of animals and to prevent animal suffering. We're funded solely by the generous contributions of local businesses, foundations, and individuals just like you!

We receive no local, state, or federal funding for the services we provide. We are registered, inspected, and authorized annually to operate as an animal shelter by the State of Vermont.

Each year we take in roughly 750 - 1,000 animals (dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs and more!) and work to care for and responsibly place them in loving forever homes.
