Tappahannock/Essex County Animal Shelter (TECAS)
The Tappahannock/Essex County Animal Shelter is relatively new, and opened in July of 2008. We are proud professionals serving both the people and animals of Essex County. Combining the activities of law enforcement with public health responsibilities and animal welfare, Animal Care and Control assumes a unique position in the community.
Our Featured Pet
Muffin is a 2-3 year old female calico domestic short hair cat. A sweet but shy girl who loves a scratch behind the ears, Muffin needs someone to give her that forever home.
We are currently raising money for our new exercise yard for the dogs! Work on the concrete pad starts on the 28th of December, but we are still trying to raise the remaining $20,000 for the fencing. Every little bit helps, so if you can help in any way, the dogs of TECAS will be forever grateful!
To adopt an animal from TECAS, you must live in Essex County or a physically bordering county (Caroline, King and Queen, Middlesex, or Richmond County). If you do NOT live in one of these counties, you can still adopt, but must have the animal spayed/neutered before taking possession. If the animal is too young to spay/neuter and you do not live in one of the listed counties, you are ineligible to adopt under Virginia state law. There is a $30 adoption fee per animal. Guard dog breeds require a criminal background check. TECAS maintains the right to do future wellness checks on all adopted animals and to refuse adoption if staff do not feel the home is right for the pet.
Come Visit Us!
The shelter is open for adoption Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Come visit us to see our adoptable animals today! The Shelter is located on Airport Road in Tappahannock, Virginia, directly across from the Tappahannock Veterinary Hospital.
How Can You Help?
There are numerous things you can do to help both the animals of Essex County and the shelter.
1. DONATE. The shelter can always use monetary donations to offset the costs of medical supplies, vet bills, and education. In addition, the shelter can always use donations of bleach, paper towels, anti-bacterial dish washing liquid, and powdered laundry detergent. Pet supplies are also highly encouraged, and can be anything from dog and cat food, to new or used collars and leashes, washable linens for use as bedding, and animal treats and toys.
2. SPAY/NEUTER YOUR PETS! The decision to spay or neuter is an important one for pet owners. It reduces the number of homeless animals that are killed or euthanized, improves pet health, reduces unruly behavior, and saves on the cost of pet care.
3. VOLUNTEER. Volunteers are a crucial part of our organization and many of our programs! We are always looking for reliable individuals who are willing to make a long term commitment. Volunteer activities include: dog walking, general cleanliness of the shelter, cat care, grounds work, foster care, and special events. Stop by the shelter today to fill out your application!
