Thank you for visiting the Fairfax County Animal Shelter Petfinder site. We are here to help you while you are considering adopting a new member of your family. Before you visit the animals in person, we need to make sure you meet the residence requirements.


Animals are adopted to qualified applicants on a first come first serve basis. Animals are identified by ID# please have it handy when you call the office. Fairfax County reserves the right to conduct a home and vet check prior to any adoption. All cats and dogs must be current on their rabies shots at the time of adoption. Dogs must be current on county license at the time of adoption.

Before consideration for adoption, all animals are evaluated by staff for obvious signs of health and/or behavior problems. However, the shelter can not guarantee the health or temperamant of any animal. Any additional testing, lab-work, vaccinations, medications, etc. are the financial responsibility of the adopter.


You must be able to:
** Meet the animal's physical and behavioral needs.
** Be at least 18 years of age, and furnish a valid photo ID and current address.
** Prove you own your home, or if renting, furnish a copy of your lease showing any pet restrictions as well as receipt of payment of any required pet deposit.
**If the animal is not altered, arrangements will be made at the time of adoption.
** Abide by all animal related-laws of the State and County in which you live.

Fairfax County residents must:
** Have all dogs and cats inoculated against rabies at four months of age.
** Keep all dogs under leash control when off the property of the owner, and clean up/dispose of any waste.
** Purchase a Fairfax County dog license each calendar year which is to be worn by the dog at all times.
** Provide adequate food, water, shelter, space, care, and exercise.
** Provide regular veterinary care, and to treat the animal humanely at all times.
** Agree to return the animal to the shelter if you can no longer keep, or no longer want the animal.
** Agree to the terms of the County's Adoption Contract.


By state law, all dogs and cats adopted from the animal shelter must be spayed or neutered. Sterilization must be completed by the date designated on the adoption contract.


$ 40.00 for dogs
$ 30.00 for cats
$15.00 for rabbit/ferret
$ 10.00 for reptiles/small birds
$ 100.00 for large birds
$ 200.00 for equine/bovine
$ 5.00 for other small animals
$ 20.00 for other livestock

In the event that an animal has not yet been spayed or neutered, the following fees will also apply:

$ 174.00 for dogs
$ 102.00 for cats

Dog's are also required to have an annual county license the following, fee will apply.

$ 10.00



The shelter will release to approved LOCAL rescue groups. Please call the office for more information.

Saturday 10:00am to 4:30 pm

Shelter Office Hours:

Tuesday-Friday 12:00 to 7:00
Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm

The shelter is closed on Sunday, Monday and Holidays.
