Donations of canned dog and cat food, rawhides, chew chips, dog biscuits, and plastic cat toys are always greatly appreciated.
The Orange County Shelter is looking for volunteers. If you want to make a positive and immediate impact in the lives of animals in need, we hope you will come and talk to us. You can come every day, once a week or once a month.
Please don't be scared off because we are a county animal shelter. We love and respect the animals in our care and we are trying to find homes for every single one of them. But we only have a very small staff who deal with hundreds of animals each year. We need your help to make things happen.
Volunteer positions include (but are not limited to) cat socializers, dog walkers, administrative and kennel support, photographers (we have a digital camera at the shelter -- just need someone who has the time to use it), people to take animals to adoptions or help with adoption fairs in the yard outside the shelter. Remember that volunteer work counts with employers and college recruiters.
We have a big need for fund raisers to help us raise money for veterinary care (animals hit by cars, Heartworm treatment, medications, etc.) for the animals. We want to hear from you if you have any ideas, know how to raise a ton of money, or if you just want to hold yard sales and bake sales with the proceeds going to the emergency vet fund.
The Orange County Animal Shelter provides safe haven and vet care for hundreds of animals of all ages and descriptions each year. Although we are a small shelter, we do our best to find loving homes for them all. When funds are available, we offer spay/neuter certificates that help pay for spaying and neutering your pets. Please contact the shelter directly to see if these funds are available.
Happily, we have had great success promoting our animals on Petfinder, and dozens of animals have been adopted by people who have come as far away as Maryland. We have also gotten volunteers who live in the Northern Virginia/Maryland areas who will drive down to the Orange shelter and take our animals to adoption fairs in Northern Virginia, Stafford and all points in between. Would you like to join them? If so, please let us know! The greater our reach the more homes we will find for the animals in our care.
Although we are about 1.5 hours away from the Washington, D.C. metro area, it is an easy drive. You can even make a day of it and stop off at country stores, Civil War battlefield sites and a huge mall complex in Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg. And after all, what is a few hours in drive time when you will be meeting your new best friend? If you need help getting here, call us for directions.
Our adoption fee for county residents is $55 for dogs and $45 for cats. For non-county residents the fee is $60 for dogs and $50 for cats. All animals are spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter and they are current on their shots (depending on their age at the time of adoption, puppies might require additional vaccinations later on). While tested for Heartworm and treated when necessary, all dogs should go on a monthly preventative after adoption. Adoption applications and interviews are required. Home checks may or may not be required.
If you are coming to the shelter to see a specific animal, please call us before heading out to be sure the dog or cat you are interested in has not already been adopted. Remember that you can call and put a 24 hour hold on a pet you are specifically coming down to see.
Call us at 540-672-1124. Come by and see us at 11362 Porter Road (2nd driveway on the right), Orange, Va. 22960. Or Email us at email@example.com. We are open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10am-6pm.[Home] [Information] [Shelters] [Search]
