   Have some recycling to do?  Bring your newspapers down to CAP and help homeless pets!  CAP uses newspaper every day to line the cages and to make shreds for the puppies. and we are running out. Newspaper only - no magazine or inserts.  Drop off at the main shelter or Thrift Store where they have a recycle bin set up.

Pet Adoption Fees

  • Dogs (over 6 months of age) - $99
  • 2nd Dog (over 6 months of age) - $79
  • Dogs over 15lbs - $99
  • 2nd Dog over 15lbs - $79
  • Puppies (6 months and younger) - $129
  • 2nd Puppy (6 months and younger) - $109
  • Small Dogs 15lbs and under - $129
  • 2nd Small Dog under 15lbs - $109
  • Cat Adoption Fees - $40
  • 2 for 1 Cat Adoption Fee - $50
  • Kitten ( 6 months and younger)  -  $79
  • 2 for 1 Kittens  -  $79
  • Cat/Kitten Combo - $79 
  • Small Dog or Puppy/Cat Combo - $149
  • Regular Dog/Cat Combo - $119
  • VIP (Very Important Pet!) Program:  Any dog who has been at the shelter for more that 2 months can be adopted for $55
  • Special Senior Citizen (60 yrs +) Adoption Fee - No charge (adopt an animal 5 yrs or older)
  • 50% of adoption fees waived for active and retired military personnel and military veterans.
  • Bunnies - $40 or 2 Bunnies - $60
  • Guinea Pigs $20 or 2 guinea Pigs - $30
  • Ferrets $50 to $69 (Depending on age)
  • Hamsters/Rats/Gerbils - $10
  • Iguanas - $65
  • Call for information on birds.

CAP adoption fees include a variety of services - age-appropriate vaccinations, canine heartworm and feline leukemia tests, spaying/neutering, deworming treatment, microchipping to name a few - the total value of which exceeds $400. In addition, these minimal adoption fees cover only part of the each animal's stay at our shelter - please help us keep adoption fees low while maintaining the high quality of care for the animals in our charge by donating and/or volunteering.

Pet Adoption Requirements

  • 18 years of age with a current Drivers License or ID
  • Proof of current address
  • Landlord approval if you rent
  • Permission of all adults living at the residence
  • Other animals residing with you must be current on vaccinations and dogs must be on heartworm prevention


Who We Are

Citizens for Animal Protection is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that providesshelteradoptionfoster carerescue and other valuable services to animals in need in the Houston area. CAP also provides humane education and community outreach programs to encourage love and respect for all animals.


Donate to CAP

CAP receives NO government funding. We are able to help the animals only through donations from people like you who want to help homeless animals. Please consider sending us a donation. The money will be put to good use.

Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation Program - Download the Kroger Customer letter here: Kroger Share Letter
Take the letter with you to your neighborhood Kroger store the next time you go shopping. Present the letter with the CAP barcode to your cashier upon checkout. After they have scanned your KrogerPlus Card you will be enrolled for the current year of the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation Program. Every time you shop at Kroger and use your enrolled KrogerPlus Card, Kroger will contribute a percentage of your eligible purchases to the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation fund benefitting CAP. Once a card is scanned with the barcode, it will be active for the remainder of the program year.

Happy Tails Pet Supply & Gift Shop

Open 7 days a week, CAP's attractive "Happy Tails" Pet Supply Shop (located in the CAP shelter) offers adopters convenient access to the supplies they will need to get their new pets off to a safe, healthy and happy start. In addition, we offer animal-related gift items for family and friends.  Come shop with us at the supply shop for pet gifts, supplies, and sundries - help Houston's homeless animals and get everything you need for your furry best friend!  Who knew you could rack up good karma by shopping?

CAP would appreciate any items that can be used for resale in the Happy Tails Pet Supply Shop.  Happy Tails accepts all animal items such as leashes, beds, dog and cat carriers, toys, etc. If you have any new items that you do not need - perhaps gifts that you received but do not want - please donate these items to CAP. 

The funds from the sale of your donated items will be put to immediate use to help our shelter animals. Thank you!

CAP Thrift Store

CAP Thrift Store (located in the old CAP space) sells gently used and brand new items of all types. The thrift store is closed on Mondays and donations are accepted Tuesday - Sunday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Proceeds directly benefit CAP's sheltered animals.

The Thrift Store welcomes most donated items including collectibles, glassware, furniture, 'working' appliances, clothing if clean and 'on hangers' and most any item in good and working condition.
