FERRET HOARDING - A CAUTIONARY TALE
Recently, F.A.C.T. and several other ferret rescue/shelters has been involved in helping rescue ferrets from owners who had too many ferrets. This effort took an enormous about of time and manpower. None of us are in the business of salvaging a wreck created by owners who can not resist the impulse to get yet another ferrets .... that is, if 1 or 2 are good, then 10 or 20 are even better!
This is an age of overindulgence. All types of rescue organizations see animal "hoarders", where an owner, with the best of intentions, has gotten in over the heads with more animals than they can care for spatially, financially, or emotionally. Always it is the animals who suffer when this happens.
F.A.C.T. strongly encourages present and potential ferret owners to RESIST the impulse to keep getting ferrets. 1 or 2 or 3, whatever one can afford within the household .... space, $$$ for supplies and vet, and time to interact .... is what the number should be.
F.A.C.T. has a free information packet that details day-to-day care, as well as long-term care. Also there are several good books, such as “FERRETS FOR DUMMIES”, available on ferret ownership, and we encourage their purchase if a family does decide to purchase a ferret.
F.A.C.T. also encourages a family who has decided to purchase a ferret to check first with local area ferret adoption/rescue organizations to see what is available. These organizations always have ferrets in need of permanent homes.
DONATING TO HELP A MEDICAL NEEDS FERRET
F.A.C.T. is fortunate to have a young boy who helps with the medical care of one of our senior ferrets. He has taken it upon himself to donate his birthday money to us and the money is used for the care of one of our ferrets. It is a impressive act of compassion from such a young man and we are grateful. If anyone who like to join in this effort, please contact us for information. F.A.C.T. is a non-profit organization and any donation is tax-deductible.
WHO WE ARE
F.A.C.T. is a non-profit Education, Adoption, and Rescue organization founded in 1991 and located in upper East Tennessee. F.A.C.T., with the help of volunteers and foster homes, has been able to handle over 100 ferret adoptions each year. If you would like a free ferret information packet, want information on how to adopt one of our ferrets, or wish to make a donation to F.A.C.T., please contact us at the e-mail or phone number below.
Note that F.A.C.T. networks with volunteers, shelters and other rescue organization throughout Tennessee, for approximately a several hundred mile radius. However, F.A.C.T. DOES NOT ship ferrets to locations out of our working areas.
Note also that F.A.C.T. is not a shelter per se, i.e., not a building at a specific location, but instead a series of foster homes. Consequently, since we are all private residences, phone calls are not accepted; please use email addresses below.
Note also that once the information packet and adoption application have been sent, potential adopters have 7 days to return the application; if the application has not been returned within that time frame, your inquiry will be deleted.
