How To Volunteer

Volunteer Training

In order to become a volunteer you must meet the following qualifications.

Call the shelter (901-457-2670) to get more information about training classes.

Volunteer Positions

Dog walkers

How would you feel being cooped up in a cage all day? We need people willing to take our dogs out to the play yard or for a walk. Puppies especially need the extra exercise and playtime!

Cat Cuddlers

Once again, cats don't like to be stuck in their cages all day. Whether you let them out and play with them, or just sit with them in your lap and pet them, it's greatly appreciated by both staff and lonely cats alike.

Our animals are always in need of a brush or bath or their nails clipped. We need a dog groomer and cat groomer that can come in regularly to help out by keeping our animals smelling and looking nice.

With our staff and volunteers being so busy behind the scenes cleaning and such, we need someone to stay up front and greet people that come in and answer the phone when people have basic questions.

Off-site Workers

Adoption saves animal lives and the opportunity to adopt is given not only within the shelter but also at various off-site locations. We need volunteers to coordinate offsite adoption events, to transport animals to events and set up, to help with the animals during the events and to assist customers. We are always looking for volunteers to help with our offsite adoption center, Paw Prints Pet Adoption Center at Carriage Crossing in Collierville and to help with adoption days at vother off-site events.

Camp Counselors

Our shelter is very privileged in that it is one of only a few animal shelters that runs a kids camp during school breaks. Camp counselors are Jr. Volunteers and they are able to work at the camp without being accompanied by their parent.

We do have a beautiful landscape, but it's time-consuming to keep up with. If you love to garden, we'd love to have you on board to help keep the grounds looking beautiful and welcoming!

Cleaning Crew

We are often complimented about how clean our shelter is. It takes a lot of work to keep it this way and we are in desperate need of people to come help clean kennels and cages in the mornings and afternoons. Without extra help, our shelter would not be so appealing to potential adopters and other visitors.

These are just a few of many ways you can help us help the animals. If you don't see a position that interests you, contact us.

How to Adopt an Animal

It is not Animal Service's intent to make pet ownership seem inexpensive or unrealistically easy. Our goal is to attract responsible pet owners, and to help them provide permanent, loving homes. To that extent, we ask you to give serious thought to the responsibilities of pet ownership

Adoption Policies

  1. A person adopting an animal must be 21 years of age or older or have a parent or guardian present;
  2. Adoptions will be refused to anyone suspected of using an animal for illegal purposes, such as dog fighting;
  3. All prospective new pet owners will be screened to help insure compatibility between pet and owner;

Adoption of animals as surprise gifts is strongly discouraged. We suggest that individuals select their own pet.

Adoption Fees

The adoption fee is $50.00, and includes the following services.

Some emails may require assistance from one of our CAS Volnteers. Those emails will be forwarded to the appropriate volunteer for follow up. All other emails will be answered by the CAS Shelter Director. If you have a need that requires a quick response, please phone the shelter at 901-457-2670. At times, it is difficult for us to reach the phone before your call switches to voice mail. If this happens, please hang up and call right back. If you still do not get an answer, we are busy taking care of our many animals &/or customers currently at the shelter. However, your calls are always important to us; please leave a message or try your call again a few minutes later. Thank you for your patience.
