About Us

1.    Pets available for adoption through Lakota Animal Care Project are all up-to-date on vaccinations and are healthy and ready to go to their forever homes.

We require all adopters to spay/neuter their adopted pets within 3 months after adopting them.  There is a $125 adoption fee and an additional $125 refundable spay/neuter deposit which is refunded when proof is provided to Lakota Animal Care Project that the adopted pet has been spayed/neutered within the given time period.

Adopting A Friend

When adopting a pet from the Lakota Animal Care Project, you'll be giving a home to a dog from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Who We Are

We are a community-based 501c3 non-profit organization that provides basic animal health care for dogs, cats and horses on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Tribal members from our communities are trained as “Lakota Animal Care Givers” to help improve the wellbeing of all our community members, of all our relations, both animals and people. Lakota Animal Care Givers provide vaccinations, flea, tick and worm treatments, and other basic animal health care.  Lakota Animal Care Project is unique in this regard, being the only such community-based effort on any Tribal land in the United States.  There is no veterinarian or vet tech on this huge 2 million acre Reservation.

We also have a spay/neuter program for dogs and cats on the Reservation in which more than 1,000 dogs on the Reservation are fixed each year.  In addtion, we have an “Enhancing Awareness and Compassion” program for Lakota children in which children can earn seven badges related to various aspects of animal care.  Finally, we have a rescue, foster and adoption program which you will be a part of when you decide to either foster or adopt a pet from the Lakota Animal Care Project.  In addition to forever homes, we are always in need of more short-term foster homes.
