The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of 15 members who serve without compensation. The Society was the first humane organization in Rhode Island and the 3rd oldest humane organization in the United States. At 140 years old, we are the only non-profit animal rescue organization in the state of Rhode Island that is legally able to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases. The RISPCA is charged with the sole purpose of protecting animal life in all situations that might endanger them. To find out more about our organization, visit our website at or email

About Our Pets:

The RISPCA places owner surrendered pets. We are not an animal control agency, so we do not handle lost or stray pets. If you are missing your pet, please contact your local animal control agency as soon as possible.
We do our best to find the ideal home for the pets awaiting adoption at the RISPCA. Some of the animals here have special needs and may not be a good fit for everyone. Because of this, applications are considered on a "best fit" not "first come" basis. If your application is selected, you will be contacted and have the chance to visit the shelter and interact with the pet outside of their cage before you and the RISPCA make a final decision. Because of the volume of applications we receive, only the selected applicant is contacted. However, feel free to contact us about the status of your application at any time. All of our dogs and cats are temperament tested before they are placed. We do our best to match all animals to the most appropriate home.
