After visiting with the potential new addition to your family, you will be asked to fill out an application. The application is designed to assist us in finding the pet most compatible with your lifestyle and to help us determine if the adoption is in the animal's best interest. Please keep in mind that all of the companion animals that currently reside at our Shelter come from various backgrounds. As a potential adopter, you need to be aware that these animals will require an abundance of love, patience, understanding, training and time to bring them to their full potential and become the friend that you want him/her to be.
Upon approval of the application, all animals that are of the proper age are spay/neutered, vaccinated, and given the appropriate tests (dogs: heartworm tested; cats: leukemia/aids tested). A reasonable donation is requested for these services, which are funded solely on your kind contributions.
WHO WE ARE
Charlestown Animal Shelter personnel care for stray and abandoned domestic animals within the town limits, as well as pets surrendered by their owners. As a municipal shelter, we also provide animal control services for the town.
ADOPTING A FRIEND
Welcome to the Charlestown Animal Shelter. Please, take your time and visit with the pets available. Our shelter hours are: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 to Noon. However, since we offer Animal Control Services, we advise you to call prior to a visit to assure that staff is available.
As a potential adopter, you must:
>Be at least 18 years of age;
>Have identification showing proof of your current residence;
>Have landlord's consent to bring an animal onto the property and in residence;
>Understand that all donations/fees are non-refundable;
>Understand that the A.C.O. has the full authority to approve, delay, or deny your application;
>Understand that the person filling out the application must be the potential adopter;
>Understand that we cannot guarantee the health and/or temperament of any animal;
>Understand that failure to answer any questions completely and truthfully will result in a delay or refusal of your application;
>Understand that this transaction is not a purchase, it is a lifetime commitment.
Please be certain that you have adequate time to spend with your new pet, including the time for training (or re-training), and exercise. We hope you will agree that the animal's welfare must be our foremost consideration.
Thank you for considering adopting a companion animal from our Shelter.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION
We receive many adoption applications, often for the same animal. That does not mean, however, that you should not complete an application of your own. In some cases, a potential adopter may change their mind and call back to have their application withdrawn from the process. In addition, there are many reasons that an adoption application may be denied. These reasons include, but are not limited to, the following:
>Inadequate or incomplete veterinary history on current or recent pets, for example, sketchy or no vaccination records on file. It is your responsibility to supply complete information. If more than one veterinarian is used, please include all contact information so a comprehensive vet history can be compiled.
>Inadequate space and/or conditions for type of pet selected, for example, too small of an outdoor yard or enclosure for an active breed dog.
>Landlord / parent not consenting to acquiring new pet or size / weight restrictions at place of residence.
>Failure to license current or previous pets.
>Prior problems with local animal control.
Please understand that processing the applications for a particular animal can take some time, as we are often waiting for callbacks from vet offices, landlords, and local animal control.
We appreciate your patience.
