Shelter News

Animal Control DOES NOT handle nuisance wildlife complaints. In the case of nuisance wildlife, please contact DEM 222-2284 - or - contact a private contractor.

The shelter is in constant need of donations; Feline Pine -or- Yesterday's News Litter, Hand Towels, Dog Collars and Leashes, Pet Carriers, Paper Towels, Dawn (Blue) dish detergent. Any cash donations would be best given as Gift Cards to HOME DEPOT, TARGET, PET SMART, RUMFORD PETS, PET EDGE. The shelter is in the process of revamping and possibly expanding our current cat room and HOME DEPOT gift cards would be greatly appreciated.

Who We Are

The Municipal Animal Shelter and Animal Control Division for the Town of Smithfield under the Smithfield Police Department. The shelter is staffed by 2 ACO's, 1 volunteer and 1 vet tech. The shelter is serviced by 2 Rhode Island Veterinarian's; Greenville Animal Hospital, Warren Animal Hospital and The RICSNC. The Animal Control Division handles all domestic animal complaints from barking dogs, loose dogs, animal bites, feral cats along with enforcing all Town of Smithfield Animal Ordinances and RIGL regarding animals. We also maintain, care for and handle adoptions of the animals held at the Town's Municipal Shelter along with running one of the largest rabies clinics in the state.

Hours of operation:

Monday - Wednesday - Saturday - Sunday 9am-3pm

Tuesday - Thursday - Friday 9am-6pm

Adopting a friend

The shelters adoption policies are as follows as of 11/20/2013. A Non-Refundable Adoption Fee in the amount equal to the cost to the shelter for spaying or neutering of any intact animal will be paid at the time of adoption.

Per RIGL 4-19-16

We will be using the RICSNC for our spay and neutering do to the great pricing offered to the shelter.

Adoption Fess:

Cats: (M/F) $75.00 to include spay/neuter - rabies - distemper - ear mite - worming - flea prep.

Male Dogs: $100.00 to include neuter - rabies - distemper.

Female Dogs: (under 50#) $125.00 to include spay - rabies - distemper.

Female Dogs (51-100#) $150.00 to include spay - rabies - distemper.

Pit-bulls: (M/F any #) $100.00 to include spay/neuter - rabies - distemper.

Any animal adopted that was altered PRIOR to coming into the shelter is FREE. Although the shelter would like to see a donation made for these animals. Any animal adopted that the shelter has placed money into will be adopted at the cost of to the shelter. (Minimal Cost)
