Our Pet List

Our Featured Pet...

Bron, a 4 year old Rotti. He has been through much in his life and as a result he tends to be unsure of new people. It takes him a long time to decide if you can be trusted or not. If he does trust you he is the biggest baby in the world, but you really have to earn this from him. Due to his personality we would not place him in a home with children or cats. Please call our shelter at 905-655-7430 for more information.

Who We Are

The Humane Society of Durham Region is a registered charity. We investigate complaints of animal cruelty and neglect from Pickering to Newtonville and north to Thorah Island. We are an affiliate of the Ontario S.P.C.A. We euthanize for terminal illness and extreme aggression only. We do not euthanize animals for the length of stay, we are not an animal control. We operate a small food bank for animals out of the shelter. Our animals come to us through our investigations department, through their owners when they can't be looked after anymore and also from other organizations. We receive no government funding. We exist upon your donations only.

Our new shelter is now a reality

Our new shelter is located in South Whitby at 1505 Wentworth Street, just south of the 401 off Thickson Road.

Adopting A Friend

All cats and dogs leave our shelter up to date with vaccinations and you will receive a copy of the records, this also includes deworming and flea prevention. We provide a rabies vaccination for dogs before adoption. We do not provide animal licensing.

All dogs and cats over 6 months of age are neutered or spayed before leaving the shelter. If the surgery has yet to take place by the time of your adoption the animal will have to stay in our care until the surgery is complete.

You have the option of taking your new friend home if you choose to have the surgery done through your own Vet Clinic and incur all expenses.

We will reimburse you $65 on a cat spay/neuter or $105 for a dog spay/neuter. This will be given to you through Visa or debit card when you bring in your proof of Casteration from your Vet Clinic.
