Our Pet List

The rescue receives no funding at all to care for a minimum average of 75 animals in their care at any given time. The staff is entirely volunteer and the rescue's shelter telephone and hydro bills are paid by the Founder. They welcome donations of money, gas cards, canadian tire money and zehrs tapes, as well as canned or dry cat food, litter, and dog treats or toys. Please see the pets for adoption at www.adoptapet.lucknow.on.ca

We welcome donations of :

- Yesterday's News cat litter

- foil turkey pans

- dry dental formula food for dogs

Please consider fostering a cat or kitten - the very slow adoption rate has hindered us from taking in any more. As well, there are 15 living in cat shelter environments because we do not have an actual foster home for all of the cats - they are so deserving of their own foster or adoptive home.............email petrescue@hurontel.on.ca for more details Though these cats free roam with each other within an insulated shelter with heat and electricity - they would love to live in a home environment while they await their forever home - the rescue does all the screening regarding placing the pet, and provides the food and vetting - If you would consider taking in a cat and are in the Durham thru Port Elgin thru London to Guelph area - please email for more information on the process for fostering.

We have many wonderful dogs, I am sad to say, we STILL have one dog that we took in many from a Mennonite breeder who was going to shoot them all January of 2008. Violet will need a special home as she loves routine and needs a safely fenced yard.

Our U.S. dogs - just about on our 10th anniversary (February of 2008) of rescuing all local pound dogs - we were made aware of the plight of the U.S. dogs - so now in addition to continuing to help all the local pound dogs - we are also helping the U.S. dogs that we can - as space as allows - as we do not believe that innocent dogs should die due to their citizenship

Please consider fostering one of the wonderful cats that are not in a foster home - but rather are currently living in the cat shelters or................fostering one of the unlucky dogs currently living in a dog pound waiting to be saved...email petrescue@hurontel.on.ca for more details

PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM PET STORES AND PUPPY MILLS - RESCUE A PET AND RESCUE ONE THAT WILL SUIT YOU FOR LIFE - THEY DO NOT DESERVE TO DIE JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE GOT ON A WHIM OR AS A GIFT

Pet Rescue is a local volunteer run, private rescue without an office, a dog shelter, or paid staff. We are not subsidized or funded by anyone. People often mistake us as being affiliated with the SPCA and other groups. However, we raise all funds ourselves to pay for the care of the animals.

We pick up the unclaimed, homeless and discarded animals from vet clinic pounds after the vet clinic has allowed the 3 days for them to be claimed by their owners. Some clinics allow the animal extra time to find a home, but if they are unsuccessful, then they call us and have us take the animal so it is not euthanized. We cover hundreds of kilometers from London, Goderich, Ripley, Kincardine, Southampton, Walkerton, and Durham, among others.

We spay or neuter each animal six months of age or older, plus vaccinate, deworm, treat for parasites, (and booster and reworm as needed), pre-adoption. If the animal is too young to be fixed at time of adoption we offer a spay or neuter rebate. We provide all necessary emergency care, grooming, and even blood test for Aids and Leukemia in the male cats which are more likely to have been injured while trying to fend for themselves during a fight. We buy their food, dog collars and any other necessities they require.

WE DO NOT EUTHANIZE DUE TO LACK OF SPACE OR INTEREST, and in fact have taken in many animals from humane societies and other rescues when they were about to euthanize for those very reasons.
WE KEEP ALL ANIMALS UNTIL A COMPATIBLE AND PERMANENT HOME IS FOUND!
Our average vet bill per month is over $2000.00, not including food and supplies.

DESPERATELY NEEDED FOR OUR CATS & KITTIES!!!

We always need kitten food - both canned and dry, as well as adult food - including the dental variety, plus cat litter. We welcome anyone willing to build cat towers or external cat window boxes so the cats can enjoy the fresh air safely.

DESPERATELY NEEDED FOR OUR DOGS!!!

The dogs use a phenomenal amount of dry dog food and treats each week.

We keep all animals until a compatible, and permanent home is found.

We do not euthanize due to lack of space. Animals do not have expiry dates!

The advantage of adopting thru a private rescue...

Our cats and kittens are socialized and played with. They do not live in cages.

Our dogs and pups are fostered in individual foster homes, they enjoy walks and playtime with their foster parents and their pets.

When you meet one of our animals, even if they have just came into our care, they are much more at ease than they would be living in a noisy pound, where they get minimal playtime, bathroom breaks and socialization.

Our foster parents & volunteers ensure we know as much about the animals as we can, considering they are often strays.

The monetary advantage of adopting thru a private rescue...

We exceed the standards of veterinary care provided by the majority of other shelters and rescues, for what is provided to the pet waiting for an adoptive home. Unlike many other places - we provide veterinary care right away - not after the pet is spoken for. We spay or neuter if over 6 months of age, we vaccinate, and even booster if in our care 3-4 weeks from the initial vaccine. Additionally, we have the dogs vaccinated with lepto and the cats with leukemia. If we get a stray male cat in, then the vet does fel. leuk testing to ensure the pet is not a carrier. We deworm with top quality Drontal Plus. We parasite treat with Revolution. We feed them quality food. We provide them with a Titan collar and a pet rescue i.d. tag, for being reunited with us, in the event they are lost.**

Yet the adoption fee for both Ontario and U.S., dogs is a mere fraction of the costs incurred.

VERY IMPORTANTLY - we treat these pets like they are our own. We do not work on a first come first served basis, we place them only to appropriate homes. We do not do same day dog adoptions; which ensures far fewer returns of many adopted pets. History reveals, sadly, in many cases; the dog will later be abandoned or returned by applicant, as often when the applicant is attempting to adopt the dog or pup immediately - it is equivalent to impulse buying - except a dog is not an item to return to a department store once it no longer fits or suits.

WE DO NOT RECEIVE GRANTS AND ARE NOT SUBSIDIZED!!

Please remember we may not be local to you however we pick dogs and cats up from the clinics at Goderich, Ripley, Walkerton, Durham and Southampton and beyond!
Contact www.adoptapet.lucknow.on.ca or petrescue@hurontel.on.ca or call 519-528-3045 after 6 p.m. if you can offer any help

    Who We Are

We run this service as strictly unpaid volunteers - we pick up the stray animals at the local pounds that are due to be euthanized after we get them in good health and assess and foster them throughout the area until an appropriate home is found - we currently cover Owen Sound, Southampton thru Kirkton areas, and have even been called to assist in Toronto & Oakville - we also list animals for people that cannot keep them. We also help endangered dogs from the U.S. if space permits.

Adopting a friend - Our fees and policy

WE KEEP THE ANIMALS WE GET UNTIL COMPATIBLE & PERMANENT HOMES ARE FOUND

The Canadian pound dogs are vaccinated, dewormed and fixed and microchipped on intake. The adoption fee is $350. If they are in our care 4 weeks from the intake date they are also boostered and rewormed and an additional $50 fee applies.

The puppy mill dogs have fees based on each of their initial vetting provided before they are released to us.

The U.S. dogs are vaccinated, dewormed and fixed on intake. We only started regularly rescuing U.S. Dogs in the last three years - to get them here we prefer to be on the safe side and do a few extras - including - a fecal test, heart worm test, bordatella and health certificate. Their adoption fee is $300. The cost to microchip is $50. If they are in our care 4 weeks from the intake date they are also boostered and rewormed and an additional $50 fee applies.

Our adoption fee for a fixed cat is $100. which includes 1st vaccines, (and 2nd booster if in our care for 3-4 weeks after initial vet check) fixing if they are at least 6 months old, deworming.

To apply to adopt an appropriate animal for you from us please visit our adoption page at www.adoptapet.lucknow.on.ca and complete the dog or cat application -
ON THE ADVICE OF THE POLICE - ADOPTION FEES ARE NOW CASH ONLY DUE TO SEVERAL BOTTOM FEEDING INDIVIDUALS THAT WROTE US NSF CHEQUES AND NEVER HONORED THEM.

THE PROCESS - How it Works

Fill out an online q and a on the adoption page of www.adoptapet.lucknow.on.ca & then email to us - I will review the application, along with any caregiver of the pet to see if you suit the desired dog or catís needs.
If you are a successful applicant we will then arrange a viewing of the dog or cat you are interested in.

If you MUST contact Kathi by phone (email will be answered much faster) - please do so after 6 p.m. and before 11 p.m. (I work at a paying job each weekday and close the business Monday, and Thursday- before I head home to clean the cat shelter and to let my dogs and foster dogs out) and leave a message stating the animal's name, your name and phone number.

We will match our dogs and cats temperament and age with the family's demographics and life style, thus we do not operate on a first come first serve basis. If an applicant is not chosen for a particular animal of interest and is a suitable candidate for adoption, we will keep the application on file in the hope that we can make a positive match in
