Our Mission

We "speak for those who cannot speak for themselves" and with the support of our members, employees and volunteers, we hope to do so for many years to come.

The Stark County Humane Society is a private, charitable organization.  We are not a county agency and we do not receive funding from the United Way.  Our continued existence and success depends upon the support of the community through membership fees, gifts, and contributions.

Our shelter is open to the public every day except Wednesdays and holidays.  During 2008 approximately 15,625 individuals visited the shelter.  Our educational and pet therapy programs continue to thrive throughout our community.  Our service for the sick and injured stray dogs and cats remains available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.  One of our top priorities remains our investigation of cruelty to animals in our county.

Pet Adoption

Our success in adoption has a lot to do with the shelter being open six days a week, which includes Saturdays and Sundays. We continue with satellite adoption centers throughout the community. There are adoption sites at PetSmart in the Belden Village and Massillon areas, seven days a week. On the weekends we have adoptable animals at Pets Supplies Plus in Canton, also.

The Stark County Veterinary Academy has continued to assist in our efforts. For individuals who adopt a shelter animal, participating veterinarians provide a free initial exam for the animal. In addition, a discount coupon for spay-neuter services is also available to individuals who have adopted a shelter animal. Many of the local veterinarians volunteer to visit the shelter on a rotating basis to examine the sick/injured animals in our care.
