News and Events
In April of 2015 we had our official ribbon cutting ceremony! We have consolidated all of our locations into one facility located at 124 Marina Drive in Montour Falls, NY. 14865
We have grown tremendously over the past several years and have achieved many of the goals we set forth.
- We have implemented a very successful spay/neuter program to address the needs of the low income public, shelter dogs and the stray and feral cats of Schuyler County having spayed or neutered over 10,000 animals since the beginning of our program.
- We manage a very successful cat adoption program having placed over 1500 cats in permanent, loving homes.
- We also manage a dog adoption program having placed over 600 dogs in permanent, loving homes and have an extremely high dog redemption rate, uniting owners with their lost dogs.
- We opened Wags to Riches a Thrift Boutique at N. Franklin St in Watkins Glen to provide a steady source of income.
And we finally saw our dream goal to provide care and shelter for the stray and homeless dogs and cats of Schuyler County come to fruition. We did it! We built a new shelter. This was a HUGE project and we continue to need the support of our community.

Who We Are
Founded in 1987, The Humane Society of Schuyler County is an all volunteer 501c3 not for profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in Schuyler County. Our mission is to eliminate pet overpopulation, prevent cruelty to animals, provide quality care for homeless animals, promote responsible pet ownership, and help the community to develop humane principles toward all animals.
To address this mission we offer a low-cost spay/neuter service for the dogs and cats of eligible area residents and provide spay/neuter certificates for use at participating veterinarians. County residents meeting income requirements and residents with feral cat populations are provided the opportunity to bring dogs and cats to the low cost spay/neuter clinics offered twice monthly. We firmly believe that spay/neuter is the most effective means of reducing the problem of pet over population.

The Humane Society operates a foster network to care for homeless cats and kittens as space allows. Adoptable cats and kittens can be seen at our Cat Shelter in Montour Falls, at PetSmart in Ithaca, by calling us at 594-2255 to schedule an appointment or by looking through our listing of adoptable cats and kittens.
Dogs and Cats can be viewed online and you can also see our available animals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 9 - noon and Saturday mornings, between 10 and 1pm. If those times are not convenient, please call us to schedule an appointment.
We are funded primarily through donations, gifts, grants and fundraising efforts. We receive no county, state or government funding for our on- going operation. Nor do we receive funds from national animal welfare organizations. If you are interested in volunteering or making a donation please call us at 594-2255. We’ll put your skills or your donations to good use! We hope you enjoy your visit with us. And, do check back often to see what we’re up to and how you can become a part of it!

Adopting a Feline Friend
All cats adopted from the Humane Society of Schuyler County have been vaccinated for rabies and distemper, and have already been spayed or neutered. Cats have been tested for Felv/FIV, and have been seen and evaluated by a veterinarian. We make sure all of our adoptable pets are healthy. Our cat adoption fee is $75.00. You can meet some of our adoptable cats on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10 a.m. and noon and on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Kitty Kaboose, 124 Marina Drive, Montour Falls, NY. We're also happy to schedule appointments outside of those hours. Please call us at 535-9960 or 594-2255. Many of our cats/kittens are in foster care so it's a good idea to call ahead to make sure you will be able to meet your feline companion when you arrive.
Adopting a Canine Friend
Prior to adoption, all of our dogs will be either spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, distemper, parvo and kennel cough, treated for fleas and parasites, tested for heartworm and micro chipped.
While dogs are in our care they will be on a flea preventative and all dogs tested negative for heartworm will be put on a heartworm preventative . Other medical issues will be addressed on an individual basis. All dogs are micro-chipped prior to adoption. Adoption days/hours are Monday, Wed and Friday 9 - 11 am and Saturday 9 - noon. We're also happy to schedule appointments outside of those hours. Please call us at 535-9960 or 594-2255. Some of our may be dogs are in foster care so it's a good idea to call ahead to make sure you will be able to meet your canine companion when you arrive.
In order to adopt, you must complete an application (available on our web site), which is reviewed by our adoption committee. We carefully screen all prospective families to make sure there is a good fit. The majority of our animals have been fostered in a home environment and evaluated before being available for adoption.
An adoption fee of $150 applies to cover the cost of vaccinations and spay/neuter, as well as the cost of any other vet care. It also includes 1 year of micro-chip membership.
If you are unable to adopt a companion animal, we welcome donations toward the cost of our adoption program. Sponsoring a homeless animal is a great way to make a difference in the life of a pet.
