About Us

The Elko Animal Shelter now has two beautiful exercise yards for our furry friends to play in.  These yards are also used by potential adopters to play, socialize and get to know a dog prior to adopting.  We strongly encourage adopters  to take some time to get to know an animal before adopting to be sure that it is a good fit for your family.

All dogs that reside in the City of Elko or Elko County must be licensed yearly.  Licenses for dogs that live in Elko City limits can be purchased at the Elko Animal Shelter during regular business hours.  Licenses for dogs that live in Elko County can be purchased at the County Clerk's office at the Elko County Court House.  You will need a current Rabies Vaccination Certificate to license your dog.  Licenses need to be purchased between mid-December thru February 28th.  After February 28th a late fee of $3.00 will be added.

Fees fro dog licenses:    Altered dogs:   $5.00       Unaltered dogs:    $10.00    Replacement fee:   $5.00

The Elko Animal Shelter is looking for Volunteers!!!!  We need people who would be interested in writing articles and newsletters, amateur photographers, video makers, dog walkers, cat entertainers and crafty people who would like to help with animal bulletin boards and other design projects.  We are also looking for people who have ideas for raising money and would like to help with fundraising projects.  If you are interested please come up to the shelter during regular business hours and fill out an application.

Foster Parents are Needed!!  The Elko Animal Shelter is starting a foster program in early 2013.  We need responsible individuals and families that would like to foster animals until they can be transported to their new families.  Please come up to the shelter during regular weekday hours and fill out an application.

Adopting A Friend

We encourage adopters of our animals to be responsible and consider the commitment and time involved in owning an animal.  Most of the animals that come into the shelter have had very little training and will need a committed person to turn them into a well behaved and positive memeber of the family.  If you are interested in adopting an animal from our shelter you will need to fill out an adoption application prior to adopting.  Please just call or e-mail the shelter and we will be happy to e-mail or fax one to you. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $75.00 and includes the animal being spayed/neutered, a rabies vaccination and a microchip.  The adoption fee for a cat or kitten is $55.00 and also includes the being spayed/neutered, a rabies vaccination and a microchip.  Any dog that is under 2 years of age also recieves a parvo/distemper vaccination and all cats receive a feline distemper/feline rhinotracheitis (respiratory) vaccination.  Animals adopted from the shelter are spayed/neutered in our own Dumke/Weeks spay/neuter clinic.  It is a Nevada State Law that all animals being adopted from a shelter must be spayed or neutered.

If you live outside the area we will be happy to try and work with you on coordinating transportion for your new furry family member.  We are a Rescue Friendly shelter.

Who We Are

The Elko Animal Shelter is located in North Eastern Nevada at the foot of the beautiful Ruby Mountains in Elko, NV.  We have 30 dog kennels and 36 cat kennels.  At any given time we operate at 75% to 100% capacity and have a fantastic variety of breeds of both dogs and cats.  Animals that end up at our shelter are strays that have been abandoned by their owners or are surrendered by their owners for different reasons.

We also operate the Dumke/Weeks spay/neuter clinic which is adjacent to our shelter.  We were able to establish and continue to operate this facility through grants, Bequests from the clinic namesakes and generous donations from local businesses and individuals in the community.  We also recieve an Operations Budget from the City of Elko.  Think clinic is very unique to a shelter our size and is the only one in rural Nevada.   We have one part-time paid Veterinarian and two volunteer Veterinarians.  This clinic is used to spay/neuter the animals that are adopted from our shelter.
