Adoptable of the Month!

Our Featured Adoptable for May

Alfie is on the lookout for a new beginning filled with more love. Alfie came to us quite emaciated with a very thin body condition. Since arriving at the pound he has already gained a few pounds and we are looking for a family to help him gain weight in a healthy way. Since he is still just a puppy, he needs to learn some manners when meeting human friends.

His adoption requirements are as follows:
A home with children over the age of 10
A home without cats
A home with or without another dog
Registration in obedience training mandatory upon adoption

Come give some loving to Alfie today!

Who We Are

Homeward Bound City Pound is contracted by Halifax Regional Municipality to provide shelter for dogs that are in violation of the HRM by-law A-700 and critically injured cats that have been picked up by Animal Services. Along with providing a safe environment, our dedicated, professional animal care staff offer tender loving care and have the animals treated by a veterinarian as needed.

Animals that are not claimed within 72 hours are assessed for adoption to determine which type of home environment would be most suitable for them.

Adopting a furever friend

What is the process to adopt a pet from Homeward Bound City Pound?

In order to adopt a pet you will need to fill out an adoption application.

The adoption process:
  1. Visit Homeward Bound City Pound during our animal viewing hours and see if we have a pet available that you may be interested in. After you find a suitable pet you will be required to fill out an application- you can do this online at our website, or in person at the shelter.

We do ask that potential applicants come to meet the animal first before submitting an adoption application.

  2. We will interview you when you are at our facility to determine if you will be able to accommodate the needs of the pet you have selected.
  3. We will contact your personal references, and as applicable, your current and past veterinarian references, as well as your landlord if you are renting, to ensure that animals are permitted in the building.
  4. Once the application is processed, every member of the household, including dogs, are required to come meet the potential new addition at the shelter.

Once it is determined that the animal in question is a good match for your household and that you have been chosen as the adopter, we will arrange a date for the time of adoption. We do not do same-day adoptions- a minimum 24 hour hold period is required. For those dogs that may require mandatory obedience training, you will be requested to bring proof of registration in obedience classes prior to adoption. Our staff will give you a list of experienced dog trainers which you may use to contact a trainer of your preference.

Please understand that this entire process may take several days.

*PLEASE NOTE: We are no longer accepting adoption applications for pre-approval.

If you do not see an animal that interests you during a visit to our facility, please come back as often as you wish during our viewing hours, or check our website for updates on which pets are available. You can also follow Homeward Bound City Pound on social media.
