Adoptable of the Month!

Loki

Our Featured Adoptable for February

Loki is a young, handsome boy searching for a new home. This spunky boy has a ton of energy and he can't wait to release it with his new family! He is quite mouthy and jumpy, so he'll need some guidance on how to behave like a true pup but with some training this should take no time as he's super smart.

Loki would be best suited in a home:
-Free of other animals, both dogs and cats
-Children over the age of 12
-Highly active (runs, 2+ walks a day, hikes, dog sport)
-Proof of registration in obedience classes is required prior to adoption.

If you meet the above requirements, come in and visit Loki today during our adoption hours: Mon-Fri 2pm-6pm and Sat-Sun 12pm-3pm.

Who We Are

Homeward Bound City Pound is contracted by Halifax Regional Municipality to provide shelter for dogs that are in violation of the HRM by-law A-700 and critically injured cats that have been picked up by Animal Services. Along with providing a safe environment, our dedicated, professional animal care staff offer tender loving care and have the animals treated by a veterinarian as needed.

Animals that are not claimed within 72 hours are assessed for adoption to determine which type of home environment would be most suitable for them.

Adopting a furever friend

What is the process to adopt a pet from Homeward Bound City Pound?

In order to adopt a pet you will need to fill out an adoption application. You can apply for a specific animal currently available for adoption at our facility, or apply to be pre-approved for an animal that may become available at a later date.

To apply for an animal by name:
  1. Visit Homeward Bound City Pound during our animal viewing hours and see if we have a pet available that you may be interested in. After you find a suitable pet you will be required to fill out an application- you can do this online at our website, or in person at the shelter.

  2. We will interview you when you are at our facility to determine if you will be able to accommodate the needs of the pet you have selected.
  3. Once the application is processed, every member of the household, including dogs, are required to come meet the potential new addition at the shelter.

To apply for pre-approval:
  1. Submit an adoption application online at our website, stating what type of pet you are looking for: species, breed, age, size, temperament, etc. These pre-approved applications will be kept on file for 3 (three) months.

  2. Keep checking our website, Facebook, and Petfinder, or stop into the shelter, for up to date information on our adoptables. We do not maintain a waiting list- we are a small staff- and it will be your responsibility to keep looking into which animals we currently have.
  3. When you've found an animal you are interested in adopting, the same adoption process applies as above- we will review your application and interview you to ascertain if your home is the best fit for the animal.

Once it is determined that the animal in question is a good match for your household we will arrange to have the pet spayed or neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, and micro-chipped. (These veterinary procedures will not apply to rabbits, rodents or birds).

Please understand that this entire process may take several days.

If you do not see an animal that interests you during a visit to our facility, please come back as often as you wish during our viewing hours, or check our website for updates on which pets are available. You can also follow Homeward Bound City Pound on social media.
