Who We Are
Yarmouth SPCA is a branch of the Nova Scotia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The Yarmouth SPCA rescues and takes care of abused, abandoned, homeless animals and attempts to find good homes for the unwanted and healthy animals in our care. The shelter has space for approximately 28 each of dogs and cats and is usually full to capacity at all times. All animals up for adoption are vaccinated, de-wormed, spayed or neutered, treated with Revolution, and microchipped. All cats & kittens are Feline Leulemia tested.
Every animal adopted has to be spayed or neutered in a designated time period, this is mandatory. The Yarmouth SPCA animal shelter has approximately 1500 animals per year admitted to the shelter. Some are reclaimed by their owner, some are adopted, and others have to be euthanized. Unfortunately, our community has an over-population of cats and dogs, resulting from pet owners not having their pets spayed or neutered, which is very important.
The Yarmouth SPCA receives no government funding. The expenses of running the shelter are covered by fundraising, memberships, donations, dog control services, and community events.
Adopting a Friend
For you to adopt an animal You need to be sure you are financially able to provide for the animal's needs. This includes food, supplies, (dog) license, veterinary care, annual check ups, and booster shots.
Be certain you have adequate time to spend with your new pet, including training, exercise, grooming, and quality time. If you rent, you must have your landlord's consent to bring an animal onto his/her property. You must also have the consent of all the adults in your household.
Be at least 18 years of age and have proper identification.
Complete an adoption application form which is available on line on our adoption page of our main web site below and discuss the application with a volunteer adoption counsellor or SPCA Staff member by phone or in person.
Please understand that this is an adoption process, not a sale. The SPCA reserves the right to postpone or refuse an adoption. We'll check with you to see how you and your new pet are doing. Feel free to call us anytime if you have problems.
