About Us

Adopting A Friend

If you have made the careful decision to bring a companion animal into your life, chances are that the Santa Fe Animal Shelter has a dog, cat, kitten, puppy, ferret, rabbit, or other animal companion who will match your home and lifestyle.

Matchmaking is an important part of our adoption process and we pride ourselves on helping hopeful animal lovers find a companion that will fit their lifestyle. Think about how much time you have to spend with a new animal. Think about the time involved: a healthy puppy can live for 15 to 20 years! Remember that settling in a new four-legged family member can take some time and adjustment. Bear in mind that just like us, your companion animal will need food and supplies and have to visit a doctor from time to time.

We invite you to visit our animals in the shelter; at our satellite cat adoption facility inside PetSmart Santa Fe, 3561 Zafarano Drive or online. Once you have an idea what you’re looking for, one of our adoption counselors will visit with you and share some ideas about which of our residents would be best suited to you.

All animals are spayed or neutered and microchipped before leaving and receive the required age-appropriate vaccines. The required licenses for city and county residents are available at the shelter as you adopt.

Adoption is a partnership between the adopter, the shelter and the animal. We are committed to making that partnership work for everyone.

Our companion animal adoption fees vary and are dependent on many factors including: age, size, behavior, medical condition and public demand. We waive or reduce the adoption fee for many animals in our shelter thanks to generous supporters who sponsor the animal’s adoption fee. Other animals – those we call Shelter Heroes – often carry a high adoption fee, which helps offset the costs of care and treatment of those animals who have a more difficult time finding the right family.

Donations, along with adoption fees, help to offset the cost of evaluation, housing, feeding and medical care for the thousands of animals who come through our doors. We try to keep our adoption prices reasonable while generating income to care for all animals in our care until we can place them in a loving home.

All animals are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Holds are available when the animal is ready for adoption. Please contact the adoption desk to discuss holds (505) 983-4309 x610

**Licensing fees are $3 per year for county residents and $10 per year for city residents. Dogs and cats within the city are required to be licensed, and dogs within the county are required to be licensed.  Licenses apply to animals old enough to be rabies vaccinated.

Pets for Vets Program

In honor of those who have served our country, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter offers a special program for veterans, Pets for Vets. Those who have served or are serving in our armed forces are eligible for 50 percent off the adoption fee of all animals, including puppies, kittens and Shelter Heroes. It is our hope that members of our armed forces will find comfort and peace through the companionship of a homeless animal from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. Microchip registration and licensing fees may apply.

Baby Boomer Buddies Program

Adoption fees are 50 percent off for all companion animals for adopters over the age of 65 (microchip registration and licensing fees may apply).

Who We Are

The mission of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter is to support animals, save lives and spread compassion.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter is the largest animal shelter and care facility in northern New Mexico. We serve more than 10,000 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals each year. As a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we receive nearly all of our funding through private donors in our community and beyond. The Shelter contracts with the city and county of Santa Fe to care for homeless and stray animals, as well as those brought through our front doors

We work to reunite people with their lost animal companions, and re-home those animals that have gone unclaimed into new homes through our adoption program. Low- and no-cost spay/neuter programs address the overpopulation problems that our community faces. Humane education programs in our local schools teach children to respect and care for all living creatures. Partnered with our community, we work for change in the lives of our companion animals and to end the suffering of all animals.
