Operation: Sanctuary adopts animals through our weekend adoption day held every Saturday from 2-6 at Pet Valu in Hackettstown, and through community events and private viewings.

All animals available for adoption are clean and healthy and have been treated for potential parasites such as worms, ear mites and fleas.

The Sanctuary staff at the event screens prospective adoptive parents, and a Sanctuary member will perform follow up to ensure that there is a good fit for adoptive parents and animals. Sanctuary will accept the return of all animals, for whatever reason. The adoption fee structure is as follows:

WHO WE ARE: Operation: Sanctuary is an animal rescue group consisting of a network of volunteer foster homes and a public adoption location, Pet Valu in Hackettstown. We rescue animals from a number of sources, often under emergency situations such as the sudden death of a pet owner. Many of our fosters are rescued from "death row" at overburdened pounds and shelters.

Surrendering:
Operation: Sanctuary can accept pets you can no longer keep. Due to the limitations of space and high demand, there is typically a waiting list for adult animal surrenders, and we charge a $100 surrender fee. We are generally able to take kittens without charge and without waiting since they are much easier to place. In cases where a pet is being surrendered due to a conflict with another pet or child at home, we offer an innovative program which allows you to bypass the waiting list and pay only a $25 surrender fee if you agree to adopt another adult cat from us at the time of surrender. We have pets available who have demonstrated an ability to live with dogs, other cats, and/or small children - check out our available pets or contact us to be matched to a pet who better fits your environment.

If you are considering surrendering a pet due to suspected allergies, we strongly recommend that you confirm the presence of allergies. Some studies have shown that up to two-thirds of people who think they have allergies, don't. They can be spending money on expensive, yet totally unnecessary, medications, or making lifestyle changes (like giving up a treasured family pet) and still not feel better. In some cases, inappropriate treatment may be making things worse. Visit http://www.isitallergy.com to learn about allergy tests which can confirm the presence or absence of allergies. If you are considering giving up a pet because of a new born baby in the family, you may want to learn more about studies which show that the presence of pets may help PREVENT allergies from occurring in children. See CNN to read an article about these studies, then ask your doctor if this is a good choice for your family.
