Our Featured Pet...

Squid is a short hair orange tabby, approximately 3 years old. He originally came as a transfer from a pound where he was scheduled to be euthanized. Squid has been with us for almost 2 years now. Mittenz is a short hair brown tabby. Her sides look like bullseyes and she is polydactal. She was given to us by a woman from our township who found her pregnant outside. Mittenz gave birth in our home and we adopted out all her kittens. Both cats are fixed and up to date on all their shots. They are kept indoors.

We have recently received our 501(c)3 non-profit status therefore any and all donations are now tax deductible. Why a rescue for rats? Rats are one of the most misunderstood, unwanted and neglected pets, yet there are very few resources available to assist them. Ratta Muffin Reskue's aim is to not only rescue and rehome rats but to educate people on rat healthcare and needs. We are dedicated to providing or finding good homes for unwanted and/or abused rats. In 2004 alone we rescued well over 700 rats and other small animals. Some that still are in need of a loving permanent home. Animal rescue is an act of faith and love backed up by a lot of hard work, and sometimes more than a little money. You must have patience and passion. Rescue rats need more understanding, more love and more socialization. And yes it is true, we cannot save all of them, but we can make all the difference in the world for the ones that we can save. Shelters/Rescues simply adore animals. It's obvious they don't do it because it pays well or because the work is easy. It doesn't and it isn't. We do it because we want to make a difference, make the rats more comfortable and make the world a little bit better for these rats.

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter....The cast-offs of Human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry! "God", I said "This is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. "I have done something," He replied. "I created you."

Each year thousands of domestic rats are euthanized for no reason. People buy them at pet stores and then become quickly bored once they begin to grow. he shelters are underfundedand hardly equipped to house and properly care for domestic rats or any other exotic so little effort is made to adopt them out. The decision to "humanely euthanize" them omes swift for these poor creatures. Rats are very inexpensive to buy so they are viewed as a "throw away" pet. Rats are very intelligent and very social creatures that deserve ood homes just as any cat or dog does. Please consider helping us in our fight to prove that every creature is important and deserves to exist just as God intended. At this time we house over 200 rats waiting for forever homes.

We have many ratties up for adoption. Help us help the helpless hundreds of unwanted, neglected or abused ratties that find their way to our rescue each year, adopt a rescue! Unfortunately, many people think rats that end up in rescues are all genetically and behaviorally inferior. But, it is not uncommon for us to get rats that have either outlived their usefulness or their novelty with impulsive owners who considered their rats possessions rather than a friends or members of the family, or simply did not really consider the time, effort and expense needed to be a rat owner. Not all breeders or pet stores will accept "returns", so choices for giving up rats can be limited to animal welfare organizations, such as rescues, or the owners trying to place their own rats. Good rescues adopt the animal only when he/she is ready and to a home that matches and is realistic about the commitment necessary to provide the rat with the best home possible. Beyond doing a "good deed", adopting a rescue rat can be the best decision and addition to the family you ever made. So visit our site www.rattamuffinreskue.org and let all the little muffins pull at your heart strings, and who knows, you may just find your new best friend.

Who We Are

Hi, we're the Ratgurrrlz, Renee & Luna Foxx owners and founders of Ratta Muffin Rat Reskue based in Browns Mills, NJ. We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and any donations that come into the rescue are used only and specifically for the rescued animals in our care. When we met in 1998 we decided that together we would dedicate our lives to taking in needy, unwanted and neglected pet rats; rehabilitating and getting them the proper medical treatment if need be and adopting them into good, loving permanent homes. We try to educate the general public about rat care and what amazing animals they truly are, hoping to transform the stigma attached to rats and bring to light their positive qualities. We have also made a group for rats on msn called Loving Rats. This group is for all rats lovers and brimming with useful information about rats. Members can post stories and pictures of their rats as well as seek advice, ask questions &/or post answers to others needing advisement. People have asked us, "Why rats?" and our response is simply, "Why not?!" Rats are one of the most intelligent and social animals out there yet there are little to no resources for them. Look for a dog, cat or rabbit rescue and you will find at least a dozen, but what about the other little critters who need medical attention, affection and homes? Try to find a vet that is even knowledgable about rats, even most exotic veternarians have limited information to give their clients and many will suggest putting a rat down before performing any necessary surgery. It's just a $5 pet so why spend your hard earned money on such extensive medical care, NOT TRUE! Rats are not disposable pets as many people believe. They require the same love and treatment as your children because when you take a rat, or any animal for that matter into your home, you become their parent and have a responsibility and obligation to treat them as you would your own family. Our motto is, "Stop, look, give us a chance!" because that's what rats need... understanding and compassion. So come into our world for just a minute and find the enjoyment in rats that you may have not ever been exposed to before. We have enough hope in our hearts that one day rats will get the same respect as all animals and the misunderstanding will finally come to a hault.

Animal rescue is heart breaking, we get so many rats that being pets, they are still absolutely terrified of people, and a lot of them end up having to stay with us permanently as their emotional scars never heal. Rats come into our rescue for all sorts of different reasons, and its hard to figure out which way an animal coming in is worse, whether it be because of being neglected and abused, or simply because the novelty wore off and they are boring and annoying and no longer " cute".

Adopting a friend

An adoption application and an adoption contract must be filled our and signed with all adoptions. Rats are adopted in same sex pairs only, except in special situations where you already have a compatible rat at home.

Ways To Help

In the 8 years we have been taking in unwanted/abused rats we have taken in thousands of rats. We are dedicated to providing or finding good homes for homeless rats. The initial cost for a rat may be low, but this does not make them a disposable pet! Rats deserve proper care, unfortunately the costs for vet care and rat supplies can be overwhelming at times. In the past we have spent thousands of dollars due to a large number of rescues. Therefore, any donations would be greatly appreciated!

We have paid a lot of out of pocket medical expenses recently, totaling over $5,000 since June of this year for surgeries, check ups, and any health concerns as well as medications. All of our reskues with health issues are seen by our vet, within two days upon arriving at our Reskue. As a precaution we keep a back up of medications and all reskues are treated accordingly. We will not adopt out a sick reskue.

An easy and free way to donate to Ratta Muffin Rat Rescue is to register with http://www.iGive.com/RMR and specify your favorite cause as Ratta Muffin Rescue. Then when you shop at your favorite online stores like Amazon.com, The Ferret Store, PetSmart, Old Navy, Toys R Us, Barnes & Noble, Dell, etc... they will donate a percentage to Ratta Muffin Rescue!

Any donation is and very appreciated and welcome - rat supplies, bedding (Carefresh preferably), food, toys, even used towels or t-shirts to make them hammocks would be great too! Or become a foster home for Ratta Muffin Reskues, or adopt a few! If you have any questions please contact us at Ratgurrrlz@yahoo.com. Or you can help spread the word! Let people know about Ratta Muffin Rat Reskue who might be interested in adopting some rats or fostering.

Ratta Muffin Rat Reskue is not affiliated with any organizations and rely on private donations only. Please consider making a donation, monatary or supplies. Small or big, everything helps! Although all of the donations recieved are used directly for the reskues.

If Not For You

I would've died that day if not for you. I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes. I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands. I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care

Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted, skin that isn't scratched or bitten, good food and enough of it, beds to sleep on, someone to love me, to show me I deserve love just because I exist.

Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands Your big heart saved me... You saved me from the pain, Soothing away the memories of my old life. My emotional scars run deep, But it's nothing that your love and warm embrace cannot heal.

You have taught me what it means to be loved. I have seen you do the same for other animals like me. I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair Why you do it-

When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.

I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes In the best way I know how Reminding you why you go on trying. I am the reason

The animals before me are the reason As are the ones who come after. Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given We would die if not for you.
