1/31/2011 - Press of Atlantic City: Great Article on Cape May County Shelter's Accomplishments

The Press of Atlantic City recently reported the accomplishments by CMCAS, including having one of the lowest euthanasia rates among shelters in the region. We take great pride in our reputation for saving and nurturing the precious lives of homeless animals. We encourage you to read all about it, and spread the word to others. The Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center (CMCAS) was officially established at its ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 16, 2004. At its Grand Opening on August 1, 2004, it promised to serve all Cape May County residents by kindly and energetically helpng homeless pets.

Communities throughout the United States are confronted with finding solutions for the large numbers of homeless pets. As a tourist and retirement destination, Cape May County faces additional unique challenges. In short, there are many adoptable animals and relatively few homes to absorb them. The Cape May County Animal Shelter seeks to ensure the humane treatment of all animals within the county and to foster a spirit of cooperation among the various organizations working on behalf of animals.

To address these circumstances, the CMCAS follows a three- pronged plan. First, CMCAS supports extensive spay/neuter programs to reduce the number of homeless animals. Second, CMCAS institutes aggressive adoption policies. Third, CMCAS implements educational programs for teaching responsible pet guardianship.

Volunteers play an integral role at the Cape May County Animal Shelter. There are many tasks they do daily at the shelter such as dog walking, cat socializing and exercising, cage and kennel cleaning and special events.

Those interested in volunteering must first attend an Orientation to see if the Shelter is a good fit for you. Orientations are held on the last Wednesday of each month at 4:30pm at the Shelter. Please call the Shelter at (609) 465-8923 or email the Shelter via the link, if you plan on attending.

**NOTE: Orientation will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014 - NOT on Wednesday, March 26.

The manual below details what volunteer opportunities are available.

In addition, the Shelter is an official adoption partner of PetSmart Charities, Inc. at the PetSmart store in Rio Grande, NJ. Volunteers make the animals comfortable with clean cages and fresh food in the morning (7-9am) and evening (5-9pm). Volunteers also man an information and adoption table at the store on Wednesdays (6-8pm), Saturdays (2-4pm) and Sundays (2-4pm). NOTE: Interested residents 14-17 years of age may volunteer. However, they must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult while volunteering. Unfortunately we do not have the staff to provide supervision for junior volunteers.

We hope to hear from you!
