Adopting A Friend

HELPING YOU MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION - ADOPTION COUNSELING

Our overall goal is to make sure the animal you adopt is well suited to your lifestyle and that you are ready for him or her. When you visit our adoption center our knowledgeable staff will be happy to answer any questions and help you choose the right animal. These Adoption Counselors will assist you by discussing your interests, needs and lifestyles and then matching them with those of the companion animals in our shelter. The Counselor will read through the adoption application materials with you so it may simplify things for you to have the form completed before you arrive.

Due to incredibly high demand, kittens 12 months and younger will be adopted on a first come, first served basis. Those with pre-approved applications are given first choice.  We highly recommend that you fill out an application and have it reviewed and approved by an adoption counselor at the shelter. Approved applications are kept on file for three months.

  • Health Exam--Every animal is examined for good health and sound temperament before he or she is made available for adoption.
  • Vaccinations and Treatment--Before they leave for their new home, each animal is vaccinated for distemper. Dogs are tested for heartworm and cats for feline leukemia. Animals who need it are de-wormed and treated for fleas and earmites.
  • Spay/Neuter-- Through our progressive spay/neuter incentives, the NHSPCA has helped to make New Hampshire a leader in the quest to end pet overpopulation. We are proud to say that at this time every cat, dog, puppy or kitten is spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
  • Home Safe and Sound--All cats and dogs receive an I.D. tag and collar. When available, microchipping is performed on dogs and cats before they go home. Every dog receives a new leash and cats and smaller pets go home in carriers.
