Who We Are
Finding forever homes since 1900. Who we are New Hampshire Humane Society began life back in 1900, as a battered women’s refuge – the vision of a forward thinking woman named M. Jeannie Kendall. Known then as the Women’s Humane Society, our founder recognized very early on the mutual link between abuse of animals, women, and children. Operating in safe houses in the southern region of New Hampshire, women were able to seek safety with their pets and children. In the 1930’s we secured permanent property in Laconia, and have been in the “city on the lake’ ever since. A name change and non profit status in the 1960’s allowed us to focused solely on animal welfare issues – thus the metamorphosis was complete New Hampshire Humane Society emerged with a solemn pledge by the late 1990’s to provide refuge for all animals in need arriving at our door and to never euthanize an adoptable animal.
What We Do
Accepting strays from the surrounding communities, providing care, comfort and all medical and behavioral services until a permanent adopting home is found – our adoption rate is in the 90% each month. NHHS is home for approximately 1500 animals annually and we have the 4th highest adoption rates of all the shelters in the New England region, something we are very proud of. We have an active volunteer base, with stepped up training tiers for those who really want to help our dogs. SNAP -Spay Neuter Assistance Program is available to anyone seeking low cost sterilization services for their own pets within the Granite State. Pet Therapy visitation to area nursing homes, and a pet pantry for those finding it hard to make ends meet are just a few of our outreach services.
