Who We Are
The Second Chance Pups program takes shelter dogs from Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island, Beatrice Humane Society and Aurora Adopt a Pet to the Nebraska State Penitentiary where carefully selected volunteer inmate handlers provide nine weeks of socialization and basic obedience training, which includes the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test. This program helps shelter dogs become better canine citizens and to have a second chance at a lifelong relationship with a loving family. It is also a great rehabilitative measure for the inmates, giving them an opportunity to give back to society in a positive manner and contribute to a solution for the growing problem of uncared for and unwanted animals.
Adopting a friend
It is our goal to have all dogs adopted to their new loving and forever homes before the end of their 9 weeks of training. Therefore applications are accepted throughout the 9 weeks of training. You may email us and we will send you an application or go to our website at www.secondchancepups.com and download the application. After your application is approved a visitation will be scheduled to help better determine if this is the right dog for your family. All dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, wormed for internal parasites, tested negative for heartworms and some dogs will also be micro-chipped. We DO NOT ship dogs, you must come and pick up your dog in person.
All adopters meet the same evening at the end of the rotation for a one hour class to learn the commands the dogs have been taught and take their pets home after class.
The current class began on Monday January 23rd and will end on Friday March 24th, 2017.
