Our Adoptable Pet List

Our Featured Pet...

We are featuring ALL of our pets because we believe each and every one deserves a forever home!

We're running low on dog kibble in our Pet Food Pantry. If you can spare a bag, or have some your dog no longer likes, we'll gladly accept it and give it out to hungry hounds. We know if we can tide over a family during tough times it can mean the dog gets to stay at home, and not come through our doors!

Who We Are

The Nebraska Humane Society is a private non profit 501(c) (3) corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We act as a municipal shelter for the metro area of Omaha and Sarpy County. As such we are open entry shelter, and turn no animal in need away. We receive no governmental funding and rely on self-generated funds and the generosity of donors to keep our kennel doors open to the more than 20 thousand animals that find their way here each year. NHS also contracts to provide animal control services for Omaha and Sarpy county, including cruelty and animal neglect investigation; and rescue, impound, safe care, and return of strays. Mission statement: To provide a voice for the animals and through them enrich the communities we serve

Adopting a friend

All dogs and cats entering the adoption program receive behavior and health assessments. They are then spayed or neutered, microchipped and given first shots. All are tested for heartworm. Cats receive feline leukemia and FIV testing. Once in the adoption program these pets do not have a “time limit” for adoption. Animals are only removed from the program if catastrophic health or behavior problems occur. We work hard to keep our longest term animals happy as they wait for homes, offering dog walking, cat group housing, and enrichment activities. We work with local and naional Breed Rescues and Cat Rescues to help rehabilitate and place animals that fit their criteria. We also have an extensive Volunteer Foster Care program. We ask potential adopters to come to the shelter to meet companion animals in person. We encourage the entire family to attend so that we can answer any questions or identify potential issues. Once here we require families to fill out an adoption application so we can help make the best match possible. Then we offer one on one time in our "get acquainted rooms" with the pet . Adopters can further assess the pet as a trained adoption counselor offers information and answers questions. If a family is adding a dog we ask that they "pend" the adoption and revisit with their resident dog(s) for an introduction of the two (or three) on neutral territory. If all goes well the adoption can be finalized that day! Our support doesn't end there. We offer a Behavior Helpline for anyone experiencing behavior issues in their home. We also offer discounted obedience classes for any dog adopted at the Nebraska Humane Society. We want the match to be successful so you don't bring Fido or Fluffy back to us!

Come Visit Us!

Our location is 8929 Fort Street so we're basically at the intersection of 90th and Fort Streets in Omaha. Take I-680 to the Fort Street exit. Go East on Fort street to 90th. We are on the Southeast corner of the intersection just behind the new Walgreens.

Offsite Adoptions

The Nebraska Humane Society works to reach all areas of the community to find forever homes for homeless animals and to showcase the other programs at the shelter. Every week some of our animals go on "road trips" to different areas in the city. The PAW (Pet Adoption on Wheels) is our 27 foot R.V. that was purchased and retrofitted with kennels through the generosity of our Friends Forever board. The PAW is manned by our volunteer army and can be seen at parades, festivals, fairs and conventions. The best part of the PAW is that every week it can be found in different areas of Omaha finding new homes for homeless animals. To find out where you can see the PAW this week call us at 402-444-7800 ext. 206 or 224.
