About Us

News

Prior to May 2007, the Bertie County Animal Shelter had room for only 4 adult cats or 4 litters of kittens.

We are proud to have built our own cat facility which houses 20 or more cats and kittens.

We also have for adoption cats that may not be acclimated to inside living, but would love a home & yard of their own. We lovingly refer to them as our Barn Cats.

Our long range goals are:
  • to open a no-kill facility of our own
  • to provide a dog park with lots of room for running, playing, & socializing
  • To implement spay/neuter clinics in our area
  • Provide assess to training classes
  • Provide education on the important roles animals have in & around our community.
If you are interested in volunteering, adopting, or simply would like more information on our mission and how you can help, please don't hesistate to contact us at 252-325-3647.  We welcome any inquiries or questions.

Adopting A Friend

Should you see a shelter resident that you are interested in meeting, please call us at 252-325-3647 to arrange a meet and greet.  Keep in mind, we have animals coming in and out daily, so we may have pets available that are not yet reflected here.

Our adoption fees with an approved adoption application are as follows:

Neutered/Spayed Dogs/Puppies:   $50.00

Neutered/Spayed Cats/Kittens:       $50.00

Un-Neutered/Un-Spayed Dogs/Puppies:     $10.00

Un-Neutered/Un-Spayed Cats/Kittens:         $10.00

Please note that our mission is to reduce the number of homeless animals in Bertie County, NC; therefore we will require un-neutered or un-spayed animals that are adopted to be spay or neutered. Please ask us for local vet recommendations.  We will work with you to ensure that this is accomplished.

Who We Are

Bertie County Humane Society (Roanoke Chowan Humane Society) is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization that consists of volunteers working out of our county kill shelter.

We receive no government funding, and rely solely on donations and contributions to allow us to find loving, forever homes or to obtain rescue for the shelter residents. All donations are tax-deductible & greatly appreciated.

Our mission is to protect and shelter the stray, orphaned, abandoned, & unwanted animals of Bertie County, NC. We strive to place them into loving, furever homes.  We also work closely with rescues and deeply value and appreciate these relationships.

We are always looking for animal lovers to share their time and talent as dedicated volunteers.  The opportunities range from helping to socialize/play with the animals for adoption at the shelter to helping transport shelter residents to the vet or rescue.
