Adopting A Friend

Adopting a Mexican dog

We love to be able to bring the dogs we rescue to the best homes we can find and have a suitably stringent adoption process.

The SAMM application process:

  1. Completed adoption application
  2. Vet and reference verification
  3. Phone interview
  4. Home Visit
  5. If approved, transport arrangements are made.

If you are interested in being added to our list of potential adopters, please complete our online application. NOTE: Completing an application is not a guarantee that you will be accepted or placed a dog.

Who We Are

Save A Mexican Mutt, or SAMM, is a dog rescue and adoption organization in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. Dogs are rescued from the streets as well as local kill shelters and pounds where they have suffered from neglect, abuse, starvation and illness. They are placed in loving foster homes, fully vetted, and brought back to good health.

Once they are completely healthy, these lucky dogs are then placed for adoption on our website and multiple networking websites. Some SAMM dogs are adopted locally in Mexico, but most are adopted in the U.S. and Canada. Some are transferred to other rescue organizations or 'no kill' shelters in the U.S. that help find them excellent homes.

All SAMM dogs are sterilized, temperament tested, given all mandatory vaccinations and if they are being transported to the U.S.A. or Canada are examined by a veterinarian and receive a certificate of health within three days of their transport.

Come Visit Us

We are an 'all foster' organization.  This allows us to know our dog's personalities, likes/dislikes, see how they react to a home environment and teach housebreaking, and we can give them personal attention.

Most all of our dogs are fostered in Mexico. For this reason, we try to include video of each of our adoptable dogs (or can get it) and it is why we have a rather lengthy application.  We must make excellent matches of dog to family.  And, after nine years we have a pretty good track record.

Also, follow Save A Mexican Mutt or Facebook.  Rescuers, fosters, transporters and adopters can all connect and stay in touch.
