Catahoula Rescue Inc. Great Northwest

Catahoulas aren't common in Northwest but we have Catahoulas show up from time to time. If there are none showing here on our petfinder, please read our happy tails and know that we could have one or even possibly help you get one from some nearby State. Please feel free to contact us if you really are interested in adopting a Catahoula and lets discuss it in depth and we can tell you what the options might be. We will be happy to talk Catahoula any time with you.

Our Featured Pets...JESSE OWENS!

CHUCK was my pick of the unplanned that a senior kindhearted lady ended up whelping out and adopting out. She didn't want or need this surprise but her little mixed female that was to have Catahoula in her, gave her the surprise anyway. 8 puppies that were very diverse in color and appearance made their appearance shortly. The lady had help from Catahoula Rescue and from a neighbor and while all the puppies excelled, it was Chuck that just seemed to have a thoughtfulness, an intelligence, a depth and a calm that hinted of wonderful things to come. We hoped he might find a home where he could even be a therapy home. A reunion took place this past week and we were all delighted to learn that he retained his training and all the qualities plus had more in him than had developed at the time of adoption. He has a wonderful home and everyone at the reunion with Chuck left smiling and since only he had the tail, he had to wag for the rest who worked so hard to help him come into his own. .

A purebred Catahoula named Spot was noticed in a high kill shelter in Tn. He was rescued by two women as a temp foster situation. The more permanent foster situation did not materialize and hard times fell on the temp foster home so Spot needed rescuing again. It was suspected during boarding that his vision was not up to par due to double merle breeding. A hearing test was also initiated and it was determined that he was unilaterally deaf to some degree. No one took interest in our plea for a foster home close to him but someone did take interest in him here in Montana. A lot work went into arranging a transport to get him here, and he came to his new temp foster home, and a week later he was transferred to his long term foster home in the Bull Mountains in Roundup. So now he has three friends that spend time working with him. He is finally feeling like he has a home. His handicaps are more extensive than originally thought, but he is amazing in spite of it. He is a cooperative dog with a bright happy personality. Easy to teach, quick to learn, easy to love. He is a ray of sunshine with bright blue eyes. We are all learning how to compensate for his handicaps and teach him tricks, new obedience commands with touch involved. We just had to share this happy tale with everyone. Don't be afraid to take a less than perfect dog, or a senior. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. His beginning was rough, but that too has changed. His new name is Zipper. LOOK AT HIM NOW

THE HOMELESS JOURNEY

His coat was dirty and matted
His eye was dull and sad
His hunger pangs were gnawing deep
His life had turned so bad

Death seemed an inch away,
Which he would welcome too.
For he’d lost trust and faith and heart,
What else was there to do?

He’d rummaged in the garbage,
His hide and heart was bruised,
Humans didn’t want him near,
They had hurt, wounded and used!

Dimly he remembered,
When he was but a pup.
They couldn’t live without him,
He was adored and cuddled up.

But then he needed training,
He had so much to learn.
He was hungry for so much in life;
Yes life within him burned.

But humans had no patience.
They had no time for him.
They wanted to turn him on and off,
At their beck and call and whim.

At first he was perfection
Now a nuisance needing attention and care.
They were busy, had other agendas.
No love, time, nor life to share

So one cold winter evening,
They turned him out the door.
Thy locked the gate to yard and heart,
They wanted him no more.

In time this dog was picked up.
A shelter now his home.
He couldn’t starve and haunt the streets.
It wasn’t safe to roam.

The clock it started ticking,
Time wasn’t on his side,
Twas then Catahoula Rescue came.
Humans with caring hearts inside.

They petted and assured him,
They would do the best they could.
To give him another chance at life;
A chance for something good.

For who of us are perfect?
Who hasn’t messed things up?
And why when we as humans err,
Expect perfection of one mere pup?

When we have botched things badly.
It’s nice to start again.
And do things o’er and o’er until
We get it right my friend!

Success comes with trial and error,
It comes with failures first.
And when we’ve reached the top it’s true,
We’ve learned from all the worst.

So Catahoula Rescue
You are angels clothed in flesh.
Keep giving them your time, your all.
We thank you, you’re the BEST

If doggie’s have a heaven,
If angels tend them there.
I betcha on wings written in gold,
You’ll read… Catahoula Rescue- We Are Here, We still care.

Who We Are

Catahoula Rescue Inc. is a non-profit group comprised of volunteers all over the United States and Canada aimed at saving as many Catahoulas as possible. But for as many people as there are-the need is greater! We need volunteers FOR MANY things! Go to Catahoula Rescue for more information. We need YOU to help us. Become a Foster or volunteer in many other ways in your state. All too often, we as volunteers get discouraged when it seems we lose more battles than we win-for lack of resources! PLEASE! If you have ever thought about helping, understand that we need you-and more, the DOGS need you! EVERY hand counts in saving these precious lives! We must stand up and be their voice!

Adopting a friend

We at Catahoula Rescue, The Great Northwest strive very hard to find wonderful adoptive homes for the dogs under our care. We carefully consider all the needs of the prospective adoptive home and weigh them against the needs of our very special dogs. We want to make sure that our adoptive families are as happy with their new family member as they expected to be, and that our dogs find the loving, permanent homes they deserve. After careful screening, we have found we have a wonderful sucess rate, and our dogs and their new families are thrilled to have become part of each other's lives! It may seem hard at the time, but the process is well worth the results!
