TWO Dog Obedience Training Options Available NOW from Volunteers at the Shelter

Group Obedience Classes are held twice a year, usually in the Fall and Spring.

The next series of classes will begin in September 2013. Classes meet once a week for eight weeks. Dogs and their owners learn the basics of teaching the dog to sit, stay and come, as well as other fun activities in the hope that this will help your dog become a better and closer companion to your family.

S & P 1:1 Dog Obedience Course

Is your dog nervous around strangers?  Does he bark excessively at other dogs?  Or maybe you are uncomfortable in group settings?  A 1:1 basic obedience course is now available for owners that are unable to take advantage of our group class due to pet or owner special consideration.  The cost is the same as the basic obedience class the shelter holds twice a year - $80 for an 8 week course.  Just you, your dog and the instructor.  There is a 10% discount for dogs adopted from our shelter.  Dogs must be 6 months or older.  Handlers must be 16 years or older.  Slots are limited.  To see if you qualify, contact Instructor Meghan Giacopelli at Green Hills Animal Shelter at (660) 359-2700 or drop by the shelter to talk with her on M-W-Sa 1-5 pm.

The very latest Green Hills Animal Shelter Spring 2013 Newsletter is now posted. Go to the top of this page and click NEWSLETTER.  Read all about all the activities and people working behind the scenes to make our shelter successful!

Adopting A Friend

We are seeking a permanent, loving, responsible home for all companion animals.  So that we may be assured that the animal you wish to adopt is best suited to you, your home, and your lifestyle and is placed in an environment that is capatible with his/her needs, we ask that you complete an application.  Please note we have two separate applications, one for cats and one for dogs.

In order for you to adopt an animal, we need you to . . .

- be sure that you are financially able to provide for the animals's needs.  This includes food, supplies, license and veterinary care.

- be sure that you have adequate time to spend with your new pet, including training, exercising and grooming.

- have your landlord's permission to bring an animal into his/her property

- have the consent of all adults in your household.

- be at least 18 years of age and have verifiable identification.

- complete this application in full and discuss it with a GHAS employee or volunteer.

- understand that this an adoption, not a sale.  GHAS reserves the right to postpone or refuse an adoption.

If your application is approved, you will be asked to pay the adoption fee and sign an adoption contract.

Who We Are

The first Green Hills Animal Shelter Committee was formed in 1999.  By 2000, the group had become a federal non-profit corporation and had matured into a 12-member Board of Directors.  The years since then have been busy.  Grants were written, funds raised, building plans and blueprints for a new building were created.

When a building was donated to the Green Hills Animal Shelter by Maggie Bush, the Board of Directors decided to renovate the former Maggie's Mess into an animal shelter.  This was not to be, but the Board of Directors was able to use the building for years as a home base for Adoption Days, Obedience Classes and Fundraising events.  The Board continued to do community outreach and humane education during this time.  The "Being Pet Friendly" newspaper column has been published twice a month in the Trenton Republican Times since 2001.  A radio spot, the "Animal-Humane Connection", has been aired twice a month on KTTN since 2002.  Alliances were formed with rescue groups in Kansas City and around the USA in a successful effort to find new homes for animals.

The Board was reenergized in 2007 when Orscheln's Farm and Home Supply donated their old Trenton store building to the Green Hills Animal Shelter.  Building plans were created.  Zoning was approved.  The Board decided that there was enough money in the building fund to begin renovations.

In less than two years, the interior of that building has been transformed.  The Board is grateful for the community support shown during this phase.  Local businesses supplied some materials at cost.  Items have been donated.  A lot of the actual labor has been done by Board members.  The Board has learned an enormous amount about the legal and business side of running an animal shelter.  Alliances have been formed with city and county officials so that they can benefit from our services.  After 10 years of dreaming and planning, the Green Hills Animal Shelter has become a reality as a permanent animal shelter facility to serve our community.

Our Mission

The Mission of the Green Hills Animal Shelter is to provide a comprehensive community-based animal care, education and adoption program by providing a safe haven for abandoned, abused and neglected animals; educating the public on responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying and neutering animals; and encouraging and facilitating the adoption of available animals by appropriate and responsible community members.
