Who We Are

The Central Missouri Humane Society was founded in 1943 to prevent cruelty to and suffering of non-human animals. The CMHS is a private, non profit organization that promotes animal welfare and provides public education concerning the proper care and treatment of animals. Our building serves as an adoption agency for homeless and unwanted dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, ferrets, birds and many more. We are committed to responsible pet ownership and solving the catastrophic problem of pet overpopulation.

Adoption Procedure

The following is an outline of our pet adoption program:

~*~If you are considering adopting a pet, please look through our shelter. If you see a dog or cat that you are interested in, please fill out an adoption application and hand it to an adoption counselor.

~*~ With the help of your adoption counselor, you will complete a short interview in which you and your counselor will discuss certain requirements for adoption and determine whether the pet you have selected would be compatible.

~*~ Adoption applications may take longer to complete without certain information. To help speed up the approval time of your application, please bring any current vet records, verification of current address and/or landlord approval documents with you. When you have chosen the animal you wish to adopt, we will schedule the animal for surgery for the next business day, if necessary. You will then sign the contracts and pay the adoption donation.

~*~ You will be given the CMHS Pet Adoption Kit which includes your contract, pet care literature, certificate for a free physical and fecal exam with a participating veterinarian and an ID tag for your new pet.

~*~ We are a great pet resource center. Please call if you have any questions or problems.

Thank You!
