Our Featured Pet...

Please click on the adoptable pet list above. Because all our animals are very special to us, how could we single out just one to feature? We also feature our adoptable friends in weekly newspapers in the area. Would you like to sponsor a "Pet of the Week" feature? If so, please contact hiawathaanimal@hotmail.com or rescuechick2011@gmail.com for more information on getting your name and sponsorship in the local newspapers. This has been very popular for area businesses and individuals wishing to honor or dedicate a memorial to their special friend(s).

Who We Are

The Hiawatha Animal Humane Society was established in 1971. For many years it consisted of a small group of dedicated members who met yearly or as needed. When money was available, spay/neuter rebates were offered at local veterinary offices. In 2004, with the support of this board, many who were original founding members, a major reorganization took place. A new board (10 members strong) is now in place and we boast of a very active organization of over 200+ members (and growing). Our programs include animal adoptions, veterinary care for animals our OWN rescued animals and foster home expenses while the animals await new homes. We regret that we CANNOT help individual pet owners with vet expenses. We just do not have the resources to do that. We DO also help our community partner, Camp Companion with feral cat control, by providing additonal man power for spay/neuter feral cat round ups. In additon, we often are able to find homes for special needs animals and we continue to offer educational programs in the community. We also have several continuing programs which include "Seniors for Seniors" by which a qualifying person 60 years old or better may adopt one of our older animals (age 6 or older) with the adoption fee waived. We also have just in 2012 started the "Pets for Military Vets" Program where we provide companion animals to veterans referred to us by their health care providers. For several years we have provided help to people who want to find new homes for their pets and are willing to keep the pets with them until a new home is found. That program is called "Pet Adoption Without Surrender" to PAWS. We advertise the pet using our many venues and the owner facilitates the adoption. To qualify, the pet must be sterilized and current on all vaccinations. Of course, these programs cost us lots of money. We fund our programs through memberhships, adoption fees, fund raisers and outright donations. One of our mainstay fundraisers is the collection of used cell phones and empty printer cartridges (large and small, all makes and models). These items can be dropped off at Gerken's Town and Country in Lake City, Scheel's Super Valu in Wabasha, or Gerken's Town and Country in Wabasha.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption costs currently vary depending on the age of the animal and the expenses put into each animal to make them healthy and available for adoption. All animals are spayed/neutered, updated on their vaccinations, microchipped, and lymes tested for dogs, and FELV/FIV tested for cats, before leaving our care.

Come Visit Us!

We have no shelter for you to visit. We are very proud of the fact, because even without a shelter we are able to place animals in forever loving homes. In 2013 we placed 147 cats and dogs in new homes We are also fortunate to have the support of local newspapers to run our Pet of the Week feature. Please pick up a copy of the Wabasha County Herald or Lake City Graphic to see pictures and descriptions of current animals needing homes. We have a large network of people and businesses working with us to find homes for the large numbers of animals in need. These include local veterinary clinics and pet related stores. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF WHAT WE DO AND INVITE YOU TO JOIN US IN OUR EFFORTS!
