Duties include: walking dogs, cleaning cages, scooping litter boxes, food and fresh water for all animals, adoptions, etc. We ask workers to do only as much as they can in the time they have to share with the Shelter. Please contact the shelter if you are interested in becoming a volunteer.

We need people or groups to hold fundraisers that benefit the Shelter.
We publish a newsletter twice a year called "Footnotes and Pawprints". To receive a copy, please send a note to the Shelter requesting a copy and you will be added to our mailing list.

All animals adopted from the Alger County Animal Shelter must be spayed or neutered for compliance with Michigan law. All potential adopters must fill out an adoption form. If the adoption form is approved, he or she will then take their new pet to the vet of their choice to be altered, if the animal is not already altered. The adopter pays the spay/neuter fee to the Shelter. He or she is given a spay/neuter certificate to take to the vet at the time of the operation. A rabies vaccination is included in the certificate fee.
If an animal is already spayed/neutered when it comes to the Shelter, the charge will only be $25.00 for cats and $50.00 for the adoption of a dog. This will not be effected by the price change.
The Shelter is not responsible for transportation of pets to their new owners. New owners must provide their own transportation. However, please feel free to check with the Shelter personnel first to find out if anyone would be willing to take the pet to you or would meet with you part way. If you have questions regarding transportation, Call (906) 387-4131
