What Is CAAWS?

The Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is a non-profit organization committed to the well-being of animals in the Baton Rouge community by providing, facilitating, and promoting spay/neuter, adopting or facilitating the adoption of homeless animals, and teaching the community responsible companion animal ownership and the humane treatment of animals.

Other CAAWS Programs

We promote the spaying/neutering of pets by offering free spays, discount coupons, and vouchers. We run a humane education program for local schools, pet touch therapy, and we have a trap/neuter/release program for feral cats. However our most exciting event is the Krewe of Mutts Parade, where Baton Rouge celebrates Mardi Gras each spring by dressing up their pets, building floats, and marching through downtown tossing beads and treats to parade-goers.

How Do I Adopt An Animal?

Dog and Cat adoption hours are from 11:00am to 3:00pm every Saturday at our adoption center. We are located at 6357 Quinn Dr. Cat adoptions will also be held at the Petsmart on Airline on the first Saturday of the month from 11:00am until 3:00pm and there are other adoption events throughout the Baton Rouge area (see Upcoming Events for details). If you have any questions or are interested in a particular dog or cat please email us at
