Labrador Rescue League

Our Pet List

Who We Are

Labrador Rescue League came into existence to honor a black Lab named Rachel. She was bred by a duck hunter who abandoned her because she was frightened of gunfire and thunder. This made her worthless to him. He turned her loose in the countryside where Rachel wandered for three years from one temporary home to another. At about age 3, dangerously underweight, with severe skin disease and infested with heartworms, she was taken to the city animal control facility. Knowing that she was unadoptable, a kind employee took her to a veterinary clinic hoping they could help. An employee there fell in love with her and had her heartworms and other medical problems treated. Rachel was adopted and given a wonderful home for the next 7 years.

Four weeks ago, Rachel died of Mast Cell Tumor under the care of the Oncology Department of Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge. During her life, Rachel represented dogs everywhere in visits to day care centers, schools and nursing homes and in city parades. She was a true heroine by saving the lives of four fellow dogs through blood transfusions. Rachel loved everyone and everyone loved Rachel.

In honor of Rachel, LRL rescues an increasing number of abandoned Labrador Retrievers and finds permanent homes for them as family pets. There are no charges associated with our organization. We are fortunate to have a staff veterinarian who provides kennel space when needed and all medical and surgical treatment free of charge. We're also fortunate to have a small network of foster homes to keep our Labs comfortable while waiting for a permanent home.
