Adopting a friend

Adopting a pet is a life-long commitment and one that should not be taken lightly. Our goal at the Kenton County Animal Shelter Adoption Center is to match prospective adopters with appropriate pets. The Adoption Center Counselor relies on individual interaction with adopters, a written questionnaire, and the observation of the individual (family) with the pet(s) deemed most suitable to their needs. Additionally, if the prospective adopters already have a dog, they need to bring it to the Shelter to meet the dog they would like to adopt to make sure they are compatible.

The Adoption Center is available to provide materials, oral or written, to educate the community about the responsibilities of pet ownership. We also try to provide as much information as possible about a pet's breed and common characteristics to explain pet behaviors one is likely to see after the pet is in the adopter's home.

Animals are placed for possible adoption after undergoing visual health screening and after observation and evaluation of personality and temperament. Evaluation is ongoing and counselors are encouraged to get to know as many of the animals as time allows, to further ensure an educated and knowledgeable adoption decision for prospective adopters. All animals adopted from the KCAS are spay/neutered upon adoption.

Fees: $80 for dogs/puppies and cats/kittens. Office personnel are available for issuing licenses, receiving animals and to file animal related complaints. For viewing animals available for adoption, looking for a lost pet or to file a lost animal report. Call for office/kennel hours or Adoption Center hours.
