Our Policy for Rescues
We are very rescue-friendly, but are required to follow a few basic rules.
you can rescue a animal when its stray hold is up. Legally the shelter needs to hold strays for 5 days. We try to give all the animals a chance at life but unfortunately this is a VERY SMALL SHELTER and when space is an issue, unpopular decisions need to be made. It is up to the rescue to find transport.or boarding faculities'and incur all costs.
Counter to rescue postings, we do NOT assign e-list every week. It is the prior rescue alliance that arbitrarily set every Thursday as a euthanization date. The means that an animal coming in on Wednesday will be listed on their site to be euthanized at the latest Thursday. This is simply not true. We will hold on to the animals as long as we can but space is key. The euth policy is for space, health issues or kennel crazy -- some animals just don't kennel well for long periods of time. KY law states that owner turnins can be put to sleep on entry but we do our best to give them time for a chance at life also. Strays legally are must be sheltered 5 days giving the owner a chance to reclaim their beloved pet. If space is an issue, we must make room. Those are the cold facts but with the communities adoptions and a truly fabulous rescue alliance, this shelter is PRACTICALLY "No Kill" thanks to everyone's dedication to saving lives!
Because we are such high volume and serve 5 counties, we cannot hold a dog very long. We will always try to do everything we can to help out, but understand that we have a 20 kennel capacity, we always have to make room for dogs coming into the shelter we always look forward to donations to help the need to make life a little more comfortable for the animals and we would love to be able to aquire outdoor runs for the summer months. This year has been rough for many pets all over because of our economy everyone is having problems but many are having to get rid of their beloved pets. So again reputable rescues are always welcomed.
