Before you adopt:
There are many factors to consider when adoption your new furry friend and it is important to keep an open mind. You shouldn't base your decision on looks alone because the animal may not always be the right match for you. It is also important to take your time when choosing a pet and consider your lifestyle and personality. This animal will be your companion for life, which could be between 10-20 years, and you should consider the personality, temperament, interactive, and training needs it will have. The ASPCA offers many tips and suggestions when adopting a new animal. (Click Here for ASPCA Adoption Tips)
When choosing a new furry friend, please take these things into consideration:
· The reason you want a furry friend
· Personality, temperament, size, and activity level
· Living space (apartment, house, fenced yard)
· Budget (daily expenses, annual vet care)
· Family members and visitors, neighbors and other animals
· Time for socializing and care of the pet
The staff at Louisville Metro Animal Services is committed to helping you find the right pet for you through conversation based adoptions.
How to adopt an animal:
Find a pet you like? Start the adoption process now by filling out a survey online.
We encourage you to walk through our adoption center to see if there are any animals that you might be interested in meeting. You will then be given an adoption survey to complete. An adoption coordinator will meet with you to review and discuss the information on your survey and what type of pet you are looking for. Based on this discussion the adoption counselor and staff will recommend animals that would be a good fit for your lifestyle and expectations.
You will then be introduced to the animals you are interested in and given time to get acquainted with them in one of our ‘meet and greet’ rooms. Spending time with the animal and getting to know each other is very important.
If you have young children in the home, we strongly advise bringing them along. The cat or dog you fall in love with may be the ‘perfect pet’ for you, but could have a totally different reaction to small and/or young children.
If you already have pets, we also strongly advise bringing your current furry family member in to meet the new prospective one. You may have your heart set on a particular dog or cat, but your current pet is ultimately going to make the final decision.
**As a health and safety precaution, please be certain that your current pet is up to date on all vaccinations (including bordatella, distemper, and rabies). **

*Louisville Metro Animal Services has recently put in place a system for adoption prices based on the Length of Stay (LOS) of the animal. This means that the longer an animal has been at the shelter, the bigger reduction in price. LMAS has chosen this system because the length of stay at a shelter will significantly increase the chance of disease in the animal and may possibly alter their behavior. The following prices apply based on the animals length of stay.*
30 to 60 days: $50 to $75 (depending on the animal)
After 60 days: $10 to $35 (depending on the animal)
Senior dogs (8+): $10 to $100 (depending on the animal)
After 30 days: $35
After 60 days: $25
After 90 days: $10
Seniors (8+) and FIV+: $10 to $25
If you are unable to adopt, but would like to help out LMAS is ALWAYS is need of Fosters and Volunteers! Please go to our main website for more details!
