Second Chance Small Dog Rescue (SCSDR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Elkhart, Indiana. We are dedicated to giving a second chance to small dogs that are in need. We take in strays, retired breeders, owner surrenders, other rescues, and any other small dog in need. The dogs are placed in foster homes where emphasis is placed on getting them medically up to date, spayed or neutered, socialized, housebroken and obedience trained if needed. Our goal is to place our dogs in forever homes. We screen all applicants, and choose the home which best fits the dog's needs and the applicant's needs.
Founder Mary Krause has been taking in, caring for, and finding homes for small dogs for many years. Seeing a need to further small dog rescue efforts in Elkhart County, Second Chance Small Dog Rescue was organized in April of 2004.
SCSDR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of small dogs in suitable homes. We are solely run by volunteers who have the time, patience, and love of small dogs needed to make this effort possible.
Thank you for considering a rescue. Our adoption fees may vary and are based on the age of the dog, medical needs, and the breed. Many of our dogs are retired breeders, so their adoption fee is usually greater because of medical money invested to upgrade their health. Dogs adopted through SCSDR are neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heart worm tested, parasites eliminated, and teeth cleaned (as needed). Any other known medical issues are dealt with prior to their adoption.

We are a network of foster homes without a sheltering facility. Please visit us online anytime! We can also arrange to meet with you so that you can meet an adoptable pet. We have a monthly Membership Meeting on the first Tuesday of the month and our Board of Directors meet the third Tuesday of the month. Please see our event calendar for the time and place of these meetings.
We are always in need of caring people to be foster parents to care for and love our dogs while they are on their journey to a new forever home. We also need transport help to drive our dogs to their vet appointments.
Every day thousands of adoptable pets are euthanized at local animal controls because of the simple fact that they're homeless. It's SCSDR's mission to to rescue and rehabilitate small dogs that others have failed, the unwanted, unloved, and abandoned. Rescuing is very expensive, costing between $200 and $500 per dog, depending on their medical needs and length of stay. You can help alleviate the burdens of those expenses by choosing to sponsor a homeless pet. Every donation to the rescue to aid one of the rescues helps, and no amount is too small. If you are unable to adopt but would like to help, this is a great way to make a difference in the life of a small dog. When you chose to become a sponsor you save a life. Your name will appear as a sponsor on this website, unless you desire to remain anonymous. We will contact you about your sponsor dog, and also keep you updated on their progress until they've been adopted. All donations go directly to aid small dogs in need, and are tax deductible.
