Who We Are

Adopt-A-Pet, established in 1983, is a not-for-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Benld, Illinois, registered with and inspected by the State of Illinois. No state or federal funding is received; Adopt-A-Pet is supported solely by memberships, fundraisers and donations.

Its mission is to rescue abandoned and/or abused pets and place them in loving homes. Adopt-A-Pet also accepts pets from families who no longer want or are unable to care for their pet. Local authorities and police departments call Adopt-A-Pet in cases of animal abandonment, abuse, or auto accidents involving an injured animal. The Macoupin County Board has recognized Adopt-A-Pet multiple times with Service Awards for this work.

Pets arriving at the Shelter are given vaccinations, wormed, and their physical condition evaluated. An area veterinarian visits the Shelter on a regular basis to spay and neuter animals, test dogs for heartworms and test cats for Feline Leukemia. Animals are fed, watered, cleaned, exercised, and as time permits, groomed and trained. Pets needing socialization or constant care are given extra handling by Adopt-A-Pet volunteers.

Shelter facilities include the original building with a grooming room, feed room, two small rooms with stacked stainless steel cages, indoor-outdoor roofed and heated runs, and multiple outdoor fenced exercise areas. There is also now a cat room with stacked stainless steel cages, condos, an exercise room for the cats, an isolation room, surgery room, recovery room, an office/adoption area, and a warehouse for food and supplies.

Administered by a Board of Directors, the Shelter is operated by a shelter Director, Assistant Shelter Director, 4-5 par-time employees, and a small but dedicated group of volunteers.

Adopt-A-Pet is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 (c)(3) charity. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Summer Time Fun

Donations and volunteering are always welcome, very much appreciated, and needed. We are always interested in making new friends who have an animal's best interest at heart. If you are at least 18 years of age and are a responsible person who is interested in working with these animals, call the shelter at (217) 835-2538.

Adopting a friend

Helpful Hearts

Helpful Hearts is a program that allows people who can't adopt a pet to become sponsors to some of our permanent residents. Those animals are the ones most would call "undesirables"...old, chronic illness, or just too scared of the outside world to be adopted. These animals will stay at the shelter for the remainder of their lives unless the perfect home arises for their circumstances. These animals, through no fault of their own, were never socialized as babies and then dumped on us as scared adults or came to us with disabilites, illnesses or simply as senior citizens that were thrown away by their families. We think they are beautiful in our eyes and deserve the same love and care as all the rest. The Helpful Hearts program was started to give people a chance to help these poor souls and not have to commit to the daily responsibilities. A monthly gift in their animals name will make their life a little better, and the foster parent will receive a picture and letter from their foster "child". It will also greatly help the shelter out if the foster parent can enclose a SASE to make it easier for their "adopted child" to respond.
