The city of Macon Bibb County Animal Welfare is open Tuesday through Friday from 11am until 5:00pm. We are closed on Sunday - Monday. Our adoptions are based on a first come first serve basis and we are not allowed to place holds on any dogs or cats. We accept cash, credit and check and a photo ID is required.
Our current adoption fees for Dogs and Puppies is $75. This fee includes spay or neutering which will be done prior to you receiving your pet. The first set of shots and de-worming is also included in this fee. Dogs over 6 months are provided a rabies shot.
Our current adoption fees for Cats and Kittens is $75. This fee includes spay or neutering which will be done prior to you receiving your pet. The first set of shots,de-worming, and a rabies shot for all babies over 6 months of age are also included in this fee.
We feel that it is irresponsible to adopt out pets without having them spayed or neutered. Our adoption fee is extremely reasonable to include surgery that could cost more than $125 from an area veterinarian.
Vaccinations and Heartworm Preventative
Please discuss a vaccination schedule for your cat or dog with your personal veterinarian. Vets normally vaccinate puppies at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 12 weeks and 15 weeks. This puppy vaccination covers parvo, distemper, cornona virus as well as other viruses to which your puppy can be exposed. The puppy should receive the rabies vaccination at 12 weeks or 15 weeks.
Vets normally vaccinate kittens at 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 12 weeks for feline viral rhinotrachetus (FVR), feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline panleukopenia (FPL). Rabies vaccination are done at 12 weeks. Feline leukemia and Feline Infectious peritonitis (FIP) are both fatal to cats and vaccinations are done at the 12 week age range. Adult cats need a booster, rabies, feline leukemia and FIP vaccination yearly. Please discuss feline leukemia and FIP with your vet.
Adult dogs and cats require an annual booster vaccination as well as an annual rabies vaccination. Bibb County requires proof of annual rabies vaccination. Adult dogs should be tested for heartworms. The cost is on average $15 with most vets. Heartworms are transmitted to dogs and cats by mosquitos. This is a painful, debilitating and fatal disease and it can be prevented by monthly heartworm preventative. The heartworm preventative is a few dollars each month, but well worth protecting your pet. Please discuss heartworm preventative with your vet. Treatment for heartworms is expensive and painful to your pet.
